Investigation of Neuroprotective Effects of Ripasudil in Mechanic Optic Nerve Injury Model

Purpose: We aimed to create mechanic optic nerve injury model in rats and investigate the neuroprotective effects of ripasudil on retinal ganglion cells. Study Design: Experimental study Methods: Mechanic optic nerve injury model was created in the right eyes of male Wistar rats (n=15). Rats were divided into three groups: glaucoma model with sham treatment (group1) and 20 µM intravitreal ripasudil treatment (group 2) and 50 µM intravitreal ripasudil treatment (group 3). Treatment was applied intravitreally and rats were sacrificed at the end of 4 weeks. Glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP), Brn-3a antibody,anti- Iba1 was examined by immunohistochemistry. Results: The number of Brn-3a positive RGC in the mechanical optic nerve injury model was 5.33 ± 2.08 (min: 3, max: 7) in sham group, 10.25 ± 2.63 (min: 8, max: 14) in 20 µM group and 16.75 ± 5.43 (min:9, max: 21) in 50 µM group (p <0.05). GFAP positive RGC counts were recorded as 24.33 ± 2.08 (min: 22, max: 26) in sham group, 16.75 ± 1.70 (min: 15, max: 19) in 20 µM group and 13.00 ± 4.08 (min:10 , max: 19) in 50 µM group (p <0.05). Ripasudil treatment also decreased Iba1 expression in the retina of mechanic optic nerve injury groups. In addition, ripasudil treatment prevented apoptotic cell death by increasing Bcl-xL protein expression and preserved Tfam protein expression in the retina. Conclusions: Our experimental study has shown that ripasudil is neuropreotective in mechanical optic nerve injury model.

Evaluation of Contrast Sensitivity And Chromatic Vision In Patients With Primary Open Angle Glaucoma

Purpose:This study aimed to assess contrast sensitivity and acquired color vision deficiency in patients with primary open-angle glaucoma and to evaluate their correlations with visual field parameters. Methods: The current study included 100 patients with primary open-angle glaucoma and 40 healthy control subjects. The 100 glaucoma patients were divided into 3 groups (mild, moderate and sever). Ophthalmic examination included best corrected visual acuity (BCVA), gonioscopy, slit lamp biomicroscopy, visual field assessment by perimetry and intraocular pressure was measured using Goldmann applanation tonometry. Contrast Sensitivity evaluated by the Pelli-Robson chart and the Mesotest II b. Color vision was evaluated by the Farnsworth- panel D15. Results: The mean age of the studied cases was 52.61±14.86 years with male to female ratio 50.2/49.8. Cup-To-Disc (C/D) ratio was statistically significant increase in severe cases followed by moderate and lastly mild glaucoma subgroups. There was highly statistically significant increase in the mean C/D ratio among cases with glaucomatous eyes compared to normal .There was a significant correlation between worsening visual field indeces and decreased contrast sensitivity. Color vision was demonstrated to be significantly correlated according to severity, duration of affection, age and uncontrolled IOP. Conclusion: Mesotest II b is a better alternative to conventional reliable and reproducible Pelli Robson chart test for assessment of contrast sensitivity in patients with glaucoma.

Photodegradation, Antibacterial & Antioxidant Assessment of Multifunctional Zinc Oxide Metal Nanoparticles Using Smilax aspera Leaf Extract: An Eco Approach

The endeavor of this research accounts for a superficial green route scheme by using an extract of leaves of Smilax aspera as a stabilizing and capping agent. Zinc Oxide nanoparticles (ZnO-NPs) were examined through UV-visible Spectrophotometer, X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), EDX (Energy Dispersive X-rays spectroscopy), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM). The NPs demonstrates potential photo catalytic activity for the degradation of Methyl Orange (MO) and Methylene Blue (MB) dyes upon exposure to sunlight.

Tolerating Extreme Hyperkalemia in a Non-Compliant Dialysis Patient

Dialysis patients are known to tolerate high potassium due to the chronic hyperkalemia that is inherent in their disease. Despite this, most reports of extremely high potassium (>9 mmol/L) are in the setting of cardiac arrest. Optic Nerve Cavernous Haemangioma as a Rare Cause of Retro-Orbital Pain mimicking Intracranial Aneurysm.

Cavernous haemangiomas of the optic nerve, optic chiasm or optic tract are rare. Usually they present with acute onset of symptoms such as acute decline of visual acuity, headaches, nausea or even decline of the level of consciousness which suggests haemorrhage in or even out of the lesion. Otherwise, they have an insidious clinical pattern with subacute or chronic visual disturbance, diplopia and retro- orbital pain.
