Candida albicans is an opportunistic agent that can produce systemic infections in immunosuppressed patients. By varying its cell wall antigens this fungus can evade the immunological response by varying its cell wall antigens. On the other hand, Larrea divaricata Cav. (Jarilla) is a widely spread plant in America and it is used in folk medicine to treat several pathologies. It has been shown that antibodies against Jarilla proteins of crude extract (JPCE) cross-react with proteins of other microorganisms such as Gram-negative bacteria.

Candida, a Rare Cause of Duodenal Perforation

Candida infections of the gastrointestinal tract are rare and perforation caused by Candida infections is extremely rare. Herein, we present a case of duodenal perforation where laboratory culture revealed the growth of a fungus, Candida and the absence of H. pylori from a 51-year-old female who presented with an upper abdominal pain while performing her religious obligation in the month of Ramadan. The results suggest emergency exploratory laparotomy and the perforation discovered was repaired through omental patching. An antifungal agent, Fluconazole, was administered.

RNA Extraction from the Yeast Candida parapsilosis sensu stricto Using Two Commercially Available Silica Column-Based Purification Methods

Good quality ribonucleic acid (RNA) needs to be obtained in order to study gene expression. Different RNA extraction methods have been described, but RNA quality and yield may vary among the different techniques and biological study species. Synergistic Eeffect of Polyene Antifungals and Silver Nanoparticles Against Candida Parapsilosis

Candidiasis is a fungal infection caused by yeasts of the genus Candida spp. Among several pathogenic Candida species, we can highlight the C. parapsilosis due to susceptibility profile. Amphotericin B and nystatin are polyene antifungal drugs most frequently used to combat this type of infection. Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) also have antifungal properties and can also provide synergistic action when combined with classic antifungals. Therefore, the aim of this study was evaluate the synergistic action of AgNPs, amphotericin B and nystatin against C. parapsilosis.

Assessment of the Efficacy, Safety and Cost-Effectiveness of Micafungin Compared to Caspofungin and Low Dose Liposomal Amphotericin B for the Treatment of Candidaemia and Clinically Diagnosed Invasive Candidiasis: A Retrospective Audit

Despite several studies having highlighted that candidaemia and invasive fungal disease (IFD) are associated with high mortality and increased costs, there are currently few published studies which provide an insight into real-life practice of invasive candidal diseases. In a medium-sized district general hospital in the UK we sought to compare the efficacy, safety and treatment cost of micafungin versus caspofungin and low dose of liposomal amphotericin B (L-AmB) 1mg/kg/day for the treatment of confirmed candidaemia or clinically diagnosed invasive fungal disease (CDIFD). In the present retrospective audit, a total of 126 patients with candidaemia or CDIFD were reviewed from hospital records and 94 were included in our audit.

Quantitative Analysis of Candida Cell Wall Components by Flow Cytometry with Triple-Fluorescence Staining

Detailed analysis of dynamic fungal cell wall components is crucial to our understanding of fungal systematics and the biology and physiology of fungal growth. In fungal pathogens this is of particular importance in examining their response to stress. However, current methodologies do not permit fast and accurate or quantitative analysis of cell wall carbohydrate components. Here, we provide a novel method permitting simultaneous quantitative analysis of the major cell wall components of Candida species relying on triple-staining with fluorescent labeling of chitin, β-glucans and mannans.

SLNs Based on Co-Processed Lipids for Topical Delivery of Terbinafine Hydrochloride

Terbinafine hydrochloride (TH) is first line drug against treatment of onychomycosis; which is the commonest fungal infection of nail plate. However, strong barrier property of nail plate restricts the effective topical treatment of onychomycosis. In this study, TH loaded solid lipid nanoparticles (SLNs) were prepared and subsequently incorporated into a gel system. SLNs were prepared by high pressure homogenization (HPH) technique using glyceryl monosterate (GMS), compritol 888ATO and a co-processed lipid. They were evaluated for particle size, polydispersity index, zeta potential, % entrapment efficiency (%EE), % drug loading (%DL), drug content and in-vitro drug release. Optimized SLNs were incorporated into chitosan gel and further evaluated for in-vitro drug release and ex-vivo antifungal study.

Reduction of Bitterness and Enhancing Palatability of Cetirizine Oral Liquid Dosage Forms by Cyclodextrins

The aim of this manuscript is to study cyclodextrins (CDs) as a potential excipient to suppress bitterness and enhance palatability of pediatric liquid preparations for Cetirizine, an extremely bitter drug. Natural α, β and γ CDs; and β CD derivatives such as hydroxyl propyl (HP), randomly methylated (RM) and sulfobutyl ether (SBE) β-CDs were screened in different molar ratios of 1:1, 1:2 and 1:3 for their inhibition of the extremely bitter taste of Cetirizine using the human gustatory sensation test.
