Movement Assessment Battery for Children-2 (MABC-2): A Cross-Cultural Comparison for Surinamese Children at 5 Years of Age

The Movement Assessment Battery for Children (MABC) is used globally to identify and describe impairments in motor development in children; however, norms for Surinamese children are lacking. We thus conducted a cross-cultural comparison for Surinamese children 5 years–5 years and 6 months using the Dutch/Flemish (NL) and United Kingdom (UK) norms of the MABC, second edition (MABC-2).

Quality of Life after Accidental Major Vascular Injury and Prolonged ICU Stay - A Case Report

Survival or mortality rate is a reasonable choice of an outcome measure for critically ill patients in intensive care unit (ICU). But it is also important to assess the impact of critical illness and peri-operative complications on health status and quality of life (QoL) after hospital discharge. The QLQ-C30 is a 30-item cancer-specific questionnaire that incorporates five functioning scales (physical, role, cognitive, emotional, and social), eight symptoms scales, perceived financial impact of the disease and a global scale [1-5].

Evaluating the Effect of Oprelvekin on Cardiac Repolarization in Subjects with Chemotherapy-Induced Thrombocytopenia: An Observational Chart Review of a Phase 2 Clinical Trial in Laredo, Texas

This study tested for the cardiac effects of Oprelvekin, recombinant human interleukin-11, a thrombopoietic growth factor, in patients afflicted with chemotherapy-induced thrombocytopenia (platelet count<50,000 cells/ul). Chart-reviews of patients fulfilling the inclusion criteria of: 18-75 yrs of age, non-myeloid malignancy, with adequate hematologic, hepatic and renal parameters and normal electrocardiograms that were enrolled in this phase 2 trial were analyzed. Patients of child-bearing potential agreed to be on a reliable form of birth control for the duration of the study. Results on 4 patients suggest that Oprelvekin does not cause atrial nor ventricular arrhythmia, a rare severe cardiac side effect, in treating patients with chemotherapy-induced thrombocytopenia.

Isolation, Identification, and Characterization of the Novel Antibacterial Agent Methoxyphenyl-Oxime from Streptomyces pratensis QUBC97 Isolate

Streptomyces species are medically, industrially, and microbiologically important bacteria that are found in soils and other habitats. Streptomyces isolates and QUBC97 were cultured on a new medium (CCG). Agar plug diffusion test showed antibacterial activity. N-butanol extracts analysed by silica thin layer chromatography (TLC), HPLC purified and identified by MS analysis. QUBC97 was identified based on morphology, PCR, and DNA sequencing of two loci.

Osteo-Articular Complications in a Pediatric Sickle Cell Disease Population - Imaging Value

Sickle cell disease (SCD) is the most frequent of a group of conditions known as haemoglobinopathies. The disease is an autosomal recessive genetic disorder, characterized by abnormal haemoglobin (Hemoglobin S) that under certain conditions polymerizes resulting in microvascular occlusions. This pictorial review illustrates the osteo-articular manifestations associated with sickle-cell disease encountered in children in our institution with at least one Haematology appointment in 2013/2014. Osteo-articular manifestations with imaging findings were reported in 28 out of 97 patients. The most frequent complications and those that required hospital care were painful vaso-occlusive crisis and femoral head osteomyelitis.

Molecular Mechanism Linking BRCA1 Dysfunction to High Grade Serous Epithelial Ovarian Cancers with Peritoneal Permeability and Ascites

Ovarian cancer constitutes the second most common gynecological cancer with a five-year survival rate of 40%. Among the various histotypes associated with hereditary ovarian cancer, high-grade serous epithelial ovarian carcinoma (HGSEOC) is the most predominant and women with inherited mutations in BRCA1 have a lifetime risk of 40-60%. HGSEOC is a challenge for clinical oncologists, due to late presentation of patient, diagnosis and high rate of relapse. Ovarian tumors have a wide range of clinical presentations including development of ascites as a result of deregulated endothelial function thereby causing increased vascular permeability of peritoneal vessels.

Fangchinoline Inhibits Breast Tumor Proliferation and Induces Apoptosis in MDA-MB-231 Cell Line in Vivo
