Adynamic Donor Ureter: A Case Report with Review of the Literature

We report a unique case of a male recipient who received a zero mismatch kidney with mild anatomical anomalies from his sister. This right kidney was malrotated, had an extra renal pelvis with moderately dilated ureter up to the iliac artery bifurcation. Immediate graft function was achieved on reperfusion, and the recipient was discharged on day 7 with a serum creatinine (SC) of 1.8mg/dl. The DJ stent was removed after 6 weeks, with a rapid increase in SC to 3.5mg/dl, and ultrasound showed mild hydronephrosis with delayed excretion on nuclear imaging. Mechanical obstruction was excluded by retrograde pyelography, and a 5F DJ stent was placed across the ureterovesical anastomosis with an immediate decrease in SC. The case is presented in detail and discussed in the light of the current literature.

The Use of Near-Infrared Spectroscopy in the Sport-Scientific Context

The focus of this research is aimed specifically at the application of near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) in exercise and sport science. NIRS is able to monitor the performance of muscle and cerebral tissue and evaluate their role during physical activity. By monitoring tissue oxygenation, an NIRS device is useful in several areas, which may benefit from its applications.

Atypical Femur Fracture Nonunion in a Patient with Osteogenesis Imperfecta

Here, we present a 43-year-old male with osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) with previously placed intramedullary growing rods that sustained an atypical femur fracture (AFF) following long-term bisphosphonate use. He additionally experienced a non-traumatic ipsilateral femoral neck fracture that was successfully managed with operative stabilization. Despite previous reports following successful conservative management for AFF in patients with OI, nonunion developed requiring osteotomy and surgical stabilization.

Dynamic Institutionalization of Research in the Field of Colorectal Tumour Markers

Institutionalization and internationalization of modern interdisciplinary research belong to the essential components of scientific communications. Our purpose was to analyze scientometrically the dynamic science institutionalization on colorectal tumour markers as reflected in four information portals. In June 2017, a retrospective problem-oriented, title-word based search was performed in Web of Science Core Collection (WoS), MEDLINE and BIOSIS Citation Index (BIOSIS) of Web of Knowledge as well as in Scopus for 1987-2016.

On the Formation and On the Surface of Inorganic Lead, Barium and Antimony Based Gunshot Residues: Thermodynamic Approach

In their first full report on the analysis of GSR by SEM-EDS, Wolten and colleagues stated that the great majority of the gunshot residue particles (GSR), between 70 to 100%, have a characteristic morphology thus providing a detection criterion holding significance equal to that provided by the elemental composition. In fact, the particles must have a spherical or spheroidal shape and their surface should appear amorphous, devoid of any crystalline characteristic.

Dynamics of Protein Tyrosine Nitration and Denitration: A Review

Protein tyrosine nitration (PTN) is a post-translational modification that occurs under the action of Nitric oxide (NO) which leads to the formation of reactive nitrogen species (RNS). RNS reacts with tyrosine residues in proteins to form nitrotyrosine. PTN has lately been related to neurodegenerative diseases. It is very essential to know the details of its mechanism. PTN is also involved in cellular signaling. The detail of such an event is still not clear. Controlling of cellular signaling is only possible if nitration and denitration is a dynamic, regulated and reversible process. In this review, the biological consequence of PTN, analytical methods required for their detection and their relation with different neurological diseases has been discussed in details

Comparative Dynamics of DNA Isolated from Buccal Swab for Forensic Investigation “Pro and Post Brushing from Some Adult Males in Benin Metropolis, Nigeria”

The present study was performed to determine the quality and the quantity of DNA extracted from buccal swab at two intervals to compare the DNA quality and quantity before and after brushing. Five (5) healthy males where used in the study, ten (10) Buccal swabs where collected at two intervals, five (5) before brushing and five (5) after brushing commonly available samples and to estimate the DNA yield and purity from the various times of collection. The purity and the concentration of the extracted DNA were determined spectrophotometric analysis, and the adequacy of DNA extracts for the PCR-based assay was assessed by amplifying a 1030-bp region of the mitochondrial D-loop.

Hemodynamic and Autonomic Reactivity to Mental and Physical Stress in Lean, Overweight and Obese Subjects

There could be progressive changes in hemodynamic and autonomic parameters causing cardiovascular damage from lean to morbid obesity. We aim to study resting and reactivity of hemodynamic and autonomic parameters to physical and mental stress in lean, overweight and obese subjects of the Oman Family Study (OFS).

The Vicky Calder Case: A Review

Vicky Calder stood trial twice for the attempted murder of her ex-de facto partner, David Lloyd, by means of deliberate poisoning with acrylamide. Lloyd was left blind, paralysed from the neck down and was unable to speak without mechanical assistance after he fell into a coma following a mysterious ailment.

Candidate Selection, Determinant Factor for a Good Result in Cardiac Retransplantation: our Experience

Cardiac retransplantation is the standard treatment for patients with advanced graft vasculopathy. It remains controversial due to the scarcity of donors and poor results when compared with the novo transplant.

Outcome and Hemodynamic Alternation in Uterine Artery Following Hysteroscopic Roller-Ball Endometrial Ablation

To detect the outcome and changes in uterine arteries blood flow after hysteroscopic roller-ball endometrial ablation. 84 women with menorrhagia refused to continue or had failed medical treatment with uterine size <12 weeks were included in this study. Diagnostic hysteroscopy was done for women included in this study prior to endometrial ablation. A rigid operative hysteroscopy, with normal saline distention media and roller-ball electrode were used for endometrial ablation procedure. Preoperative findings of studied women including Doppler findings were compared to 3, 6 and 12 months post-operative findings to detect outcome and changes in uterine arteries blood flow after hysteroscopic roller-ball endometrial ablation.

Methadone and Torsade De Pointes in the Therapeutic Range

Methadone, a long-acting opioid agonist, binds to and occupies mu-opioid receptors, preventing withdrawal symptoms for 24 hours or longer, reduces craving for opioids, and, by maintaining high levels of opioid tolerance, reduces the euphoric effects of subsequent illicit opioid use. As a controlled substance with potential for abuse, methadone use is regulated in the US and other countries.
