Effect of Substituting Soybean Meal with Fermented Leaves and Seeds of the Rubber Tree (Havea brasiliensis) on Protein Intake and Percentage of Organ Weight in Broiler Chicken

This study aimed to determine the protein intake and percentage of organ weight in broilers fed rations containing fermented leaves and seeds from the rubber tree (FLSRT) as a substitute for soybean meal. The results of this study are also expected to reduce the use of imported feed ingredients and feed ingredients that compete with human needs, such as soybean meal.

Democratization of Genomic Tools to Improve Autochthonous Sheep Breeds Productivity in Developing Countries

While the gap is widening between developed and developing countries in the field of classical animal genetics and breeding, genomic tools are becoming the method of choice in developed countries. The objectives of this study were to 1) demonstrate by a real case how the lack of suitable breeding strategies can be a major threat to autochthonous sheep breeds improvement and 2) show how genomic tools could be an efficient alternative tool to reverse the decrease of native breed productivity. A total of 54,476 fat tail Barabrine lambs from 77 flocks recorded during the period 2010-2014 were used in this study.

Ingredients and Pathways for Sustainable Sheep Breeding Strategies under Low Input Production Systems: The Example of Two Distinct Sheep Breeds

Near East and North Africa have 90 percent of their territory classified as arid or semi-arid rangelands. Increasing importation of animals and animal products are still followed due to an increasing consumers’ demand and poor producing abilities of existing native breeds. The objectives of this paper were to: 1) underline major genetic constraints for improving native sheep breeds productivities under low input production systems, 2) identify main ingredients and pathways for sustainable sheep breeding strategies under low input production systems.

Variability of Morphological Markers of Cone and Seeds in Natural Populations and Artificial Plantations of the Scots Pine (Pinus sylvestris L.)

The variability of morphological markers of the reproductive organs in seven natural populations and nine artificial plantations of the Scots pine of Ukrainian Polissya (Volyn, Rivne and Kyiv regions) was studied. The colour of cones, seeds, winged seeds, and the apophysis of the cones of the trees were used as morphological markers.

Proteomic Analysis in Response to Germination in Ceiba pentandra (Kapok) Seeds

1-D, 2-D gel electrophoresis, mass spectrometry and bioinformatics analysis were established and utilized to examine the changes in protein expressions associated with germination of Ceiba pentandra seeds.The change in protein pattern was analysed by 1-D and 2-D gel electrophoresis for better separation and to ascertain the pattern of protein mobilization during germination.

Timing is everything: Lipid and Energy Losses with Simulated Nasogastric Tube Feeds

To determine the proportion of human milk (pooled and homogenized) fat loss via feeding tube in a simulated 24-hour feeding cycle. Anonymous samples of frozen human milk were obtained, thawed and pooled (pHM) in a 1000 mL glass beaker with a magnetic stir bar. Eight syringes (30 mL each) were prepared and attached to 60” extension tubing and a 5 FR polyurethane or silicone nasogastric (NG) tube. Samples to test for pool uniformity were collected at the beginning, middle and end of syringe preparation. Milk was delivered sequentially via gravity, 30-minute or 60-minute infusion. Pooled human milk was analyzed for macronutrient content at the end of each feeding “cycle”. All scenarios were repeated using homogenized donor human milk (hDHM).

Meeting the Sexual and Reproductive Health Including HIV Needs of South Sudanese Refugees in Gambella, Ethiopia

Sexual and reproductive health services are more often than not perceived as low in the hierarchy of needs during humanitarian crisis yet populations in crisis need and have a right to sexual and reproductive health (SRH) services. A project to meet the SRH needs of South Sudanese refugees was designed and implemented in Ethiopia. A post emergency review was done to assess the performance of the project. A desk review; 10 key informant interviews with project management staff, partners, and beneficiaries; 5 focus group discussions (FGDs) with a total of 42 participants representing adult men/women and boys/girls was done. Thematic and content analyses approach was used for data analysis.

Evaluation of The Immunomodulatory In Vivo Activity of Laminaria Hyperborea Fucoidan Relative to Commercial (1,3/1,6)-Β-D-Glucans from Yeast and Mushrooms

A fucoidan with high ester sulfate content (38-40% by weight) has been isolated in a commercial scale process from Laminaria hyperborea harvested from the western coast of Norway. This is the first characterization of a fucoidan from this species of macroalgae. Ultra purified samples with negligible endotoxin levels were evaluated for cytokine expression in cultured human mononuclear cells.

Effects of Treated Banana Peel Meal on the Feed Efficiency, Digestibility and Cost Effectiveness of Broiler Chickens Diet

The study was conducted to investigate effect and the nutritive value of treated banana peel meal at substitutionary levels for maize and other ingredients on the feed efficiency, digestibility and cost effectiveness on broiler chickens diet. A total of one hundred and eighty (180) Arbor Acres broilers were randomly distributed into four treatment groups of 0%-control, 10, 20 and 30% inclusion of treated banana peel meal as T0, T10, T20 and T30 treatments respectively.

Fabrication of Vertical Cu2ZnSnS4 Nanowire Arrays by Two-Step Electroplating Method into Anodic Aluminum Oxide Template

Vertical Cu2ZnSnS4 (CZTS) nanowire arrays have been synthesized via two-step electroplating method into anodized aluminum oxide template. For deposition of CZTS nanowires, anodized aluminum oxide (AAO) was used as the growth mask for the growth of the nanowires. AAO templates with hole sizes of 70 nm in diameter were used in the experiments.
