With the growing burden of type 2 diabetes (T2D) and associated health, social, and economiccosts in sub-Saharan Africa, tools are needed to assess T2D risks rapidly, allowing for targeted early intervention. Falsely Low HbA1c Unmasking a Latent HbE Defec

The current case report illustrates role of vigilant laboratory services that helped in unmasking asymptomatic HbE variant in a middle aged known diabetic woman who came as an outdoor patient and on subsequent HbA1c testing was found to have lower value -2.9 %. It triggered extensive workup after looking for common causes and an electrophoresis of Hemoglobin revealed HbE variant.

Hemoglobin SC Disease with COVID-19 Presenting with Multiple Infarcts and Acute Splenic Sequestration Crises

Hb SC disease is a type of hemoglobinopathy that can be viewed as a hybrid of hemoglobin S and C. In this disorder there is co-inheritance of one Hbs gene and one HbC gene resulting in a milder phenotype than sickle cell anemia (SCA). Whereas SCA clinical features have been extensively studied, very few studies have been dedicated specifically to HbSC disease as most cases are reported to be silent or of mild severity. As the pandemic continues to evolve with the novel Sars-CoV-2 virus we have learned it can lead to thrombotic complications which could be fatal if not detected early. Of those requiring admission to the intensive care unit, most carry multiple comorbidities (hypertension, diabetes mellitus etc.) leading to worse clinical outcomes. Here, we present a case of a young adult patient with silent hemoglobin SC disease who tested positive for SARS-CoV-2 leading to multiple infarcts, splenic sequestration and respiratory failure. The concurrence of a hemoglobinopathy and COVID-19 should warrant heightened clinical suspicion for unusual outcomes. Hence, providers must remain vigilant while treating any patient with any hemoglobinopathy in the setting of COVID-19.

Effect of a Nationwide Universal HBV Vaccination Program and Catch-Up Vaccination Campaign on HBV Prevalence in Children

In individuals with no immune disorders, a total of three Hepatitis B virus (HBV) vaccinations is recommended, with no need for booster doses except for certain circumstances. However, some studies have indicated that in infants vaccinated at birth against HBV in the context of a universal vaccination program may have reduced antibody titers over years, with a need for a booster dose at adolescence.

His Bundle Pacing: Short Review of Literature and Technical Aspects

History of pacing has evolved from the primitive state of temporary transvenous pacing by a large fixed machine to leadless modern technology. The pacing site has also been changed from traditional right ventricular apex to various other sites. The concept behind such experiment was due to several complications in the long term from traditional Right Ventricular Apical Pacing (RVAP). The His Bundle pacing results in conduction and contraction similar to and more often called physiological pacing. This mini-review describes the short history of the evolution of the concept of His Bundle pacing and its technical aspects of successful implantation.

Differential Expression of Proteins Associated with Chronic Hepatitis B Virus Infection on HeLa cell lines

Treatment of Hepatitis B infection is available with the help of existing drugs but the eradication of HBV infection is still under the pipeline. The application of novel drugs and gene-based therapies for HBV infection in need of the hour, however, the lack of efficient cell culture system, animal models for viral infection and replication acts as a major obstacle for novel therapies. This not only hampers the progress of HBV research but also stress the need for effective forthcoming therapeutics for Hepatitis B infection. Proteomic studies to understand the protein ubiquitination and to find molecular markers are the effective tools to study the HBV infection, pathogenesis and its control.

Significance of Hba1c in Diabetic Ocular Motor Cranial Nerve Palsies

The aim of this study was to evaluate the cases of Isolated Third, Fourth and Sixth Cranial Nerve (CN) palsies of microvascular etiology in patients with Diabetes mellitus(Type2) and analyze their Glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c) levels. A retrospective study of patients diagnosed with third, fourth or sixth nerve palsy over three years, 2014- 2017 was done. 61 patients with the nerve palsy of microvascular ischaemic etiology due to diabetes mellitus(Type2) were selected for the study. The latest laboratory investigations that the patient had were recorded. The fasting, postprandial blood sugars and HbA1c levels were analyzed. Analysis was done using Microsoft excel 2010.

Osteo-Articular Complications in a Pediatric Sickle Cell Disease Population - Imaging Value

Sickle cell disease (SCD) is the most frequent of a group of conditions known as haemoglobinopathies. The disease is an autosomal recessive genetic disorder, characterized by abnormal haemoglobin (Hemoglobin S) that under certain conditions polymerizes resulting in microvascular occlusions. This pictorial review illustrates the osteo-articular manifestations associated with sickle-cell disease encountered in children in our institution with at least one Haematology appointment in 2013/2014. Osteo-articular manifestations with imaging findings were reported in 28 out of 97 patients. The most frequent complications and those that required hospital care were painful vaso-occlusive crisis and femoral head osteomyelitis.
