Treatment of pulp and paper mill effluent by the coagulation-flocculation process
Tunisian mill wastewater analyzed for the first time prove high Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) and high Turbidity values and deserve treatment. The biodegradability index determined by the biochemical oxygen demand (BOD)/chemical oxygen demand (COD) ratio was only 0.072, suggesting its limited biodegradability. Primarily, settling tank showed a positive effect in COD values reduced from 2490 to 448.2 mg/L. In addition, turbidity was reduced from 140 to 65.8 NTU. The coagulation-flocculation process using chemical coagulants-flocculants prior treatment equilibrate this ratio in range 1-2 promises a feasible biological treatment
Antiradical and Antibacterial Activities of The Ethanolic Extract of Terminalia Avicennioides Guill. and Perr. (Combretaceae) from Chad
Oxidative stress associated with bacterial infections, are recognized as being a key factor in the appearance and complications of many chronic pathologies. To help overcome these difficulties, herbal remedies are one of the alternatives for the development of traditionally improved drugs. The objective of this work is to evaluate the antiradical and antibacterial activities of the ethanolic extract of the bark of the trunk of Terminalia avicennioides. Plant used in traditional medicine in Chad in the treatment of infectious diseases.
Multiple intracerebral hemorrhagic lesions complicating minimal cranioencephalic trauma in a child with severe hemophilia A, trisomy 21 and sickle cell trait carrier: a case report
Intracranial hemorrhage (ICH) is a life-threatening complication in hemophilia. It often occurs during childhood after minimal head trauma. It poses a problem of diagnostic and therapeutic management, especially in Africa where CFCs are not always available.
An Adjuvant Approach to Alleviate Reoccurring or Treatment Resistant Symptoms of IBD in Companion Animals
Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a common yet distressing condition afflicting tissues of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract in
companion animals; symptoms include vomiting, diarrhoea, loss of appetite and weight loss. Pathogenesis of IBD may link to both
diet and parasitic or bacterial infections of the gut. Although current treatments may provide some relief to the animal, unfortunately
recurrent flaring of symptoms is not uncommon. Therapeutic interventions available to the veterinarian include those that focus on
treating any underlying infection and or a change in diet, both employed with the aim of reducing inflammation.
Effects of Planting Dates on Nutritional and Phytochemical Compositions of Onion Varieties Under Rain-fed and Irrigation Facilities in Ogbomoso, Nigeria
Onion is a high-value vegetable consumed in Nigeria on a daily basis, and it forms an integral part of the diet, but the nutritional quality is low due to lack of appropriate cultural practices. The study examined the effects of planting dates on the nutritional quality of onion varieties in Ogbomoso, Nigeria. Five onion varieties (Local white, a local red, karibou, gandiol+, and safari) were subjected into four different planting dates namely, two under rain-fed (early April and August) and two under irrigation (early September and
November).
Atypical Femur Fracture Nonunion in a Patient with Osteogenesis Imperfecta
Here, we present a 43-year-old male with osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) with previously placed intramedullary growing rods that sustained an atypical femur fracture (AFF) following long-term bisphosphonate use. He additionally experienced a non-traumatic ipsilateral femoral neck fracture that was successfully managed with operative stabilization. Despite previous reports following successful conservative management for AFF in patients with OI, nonunion developed requiring osteotomy and surgical stabilization.
Anti-Diabetic Activity of Lycopene Niosomes: Experimental Observation
The lycopene is a known bioactive constituent of Lycopersicum esculentum and its application in diabetes is an active area of research.
The lycopene has disadvantages such as susceptible to light, heat, and oxidants, which limit its therapeutic applications. In the present
investigation, we reported lycopene niosomes formulation which can enhance its anti-diabetic application. The niosome formulation
was prepared to preserve lycopene activity.
Obesity and its Correlates among Junior High School Children in the Accra Metropolis
The prevalence of obesity is on the increase worldwide due to changes in diet and physical activity patterns. Childhood obesity is now a major public health challenge in advanced economies. Obesity in childhood tends to persist into adulthood and to predispose to non-communicable diseases. There is little data on childhood obesity and its correlates and determinants in sub-Saharan Africa. A cross-sectional study was carried out using simple random sampling technique to select 260 junior high school children aged 11-15 years from six basic schools (n=768) from three different socioeconomic (low, middle, high) areas of Accra, the capital city of Ghana.
Novel analytical technologies of Quality in the Sheep & Goat Dairy Sector
France, Greece, Italy, and Spain the major sheep and goat milk producers in Europe, got the initiative through an interim of 30 years (1985 – 2015), to organize - through IDF - 7 symposiums aiming at the upgrade of the Dairy Sector. One major interest was the milk quality. Stepwise, the efforts followed cow milk structural development in organizing the testing laboratory, the definition of quality in composition (fat, protein, lactose, total solids), in Hygienic (Total Bacteria Count, Somatic Cell Count, antibiotics residues and Aflatoxin M1 contamination), adulteration with water and detection of milk species. EU, by Decision 2002/657/EC, defined the rules for the Directive 96/23/EC, enumerated the testing methods, the demands in sampling procedures, the minimum limits of performance, the quality control (ISO 17025) and the interpretation of results. The equivalency of results from different laboratories, through ISO 17025, demanded the application of ISO analytical standards.
Methylmalonic Acidemia and Megaloblastic Anemia due to Congenital Intrinsic Factor Deficiency
Causes of vitamin B12 deficiency in children include decreased intake, abnormal absorption, and inborn errors of B12 transport and metabolism. Rare causes of abnormal cobalamin absorption include Imerslund-Grasbeck syndrome (IGS) and intrinsic factor deficiency (IFD). IGS and IFD are caused by defects in the genes CUBN, AMN, and GIF. We describe a 2 year old male who presented with severe megaloblastic anemia and methylmalonic acidemia. He was found to have a GIF heterozygous mutation c.79+1G>A associated with congenital gastric intrinsic factor deficiency and a novel variant c.960C>A in trans position.
Radiation Awareness amongst Junior Doctors
Recent literature has suggested that junior doctors’ knowledge of ionising radiation is inadequate. Advances in technology and availability have led to of these investigations being readily requested. Exposure is associated with adverse risks especially malignancy; therefore in accordance with the Ionising Radiation (Medical Exposures) Regulation (IR(ME)R), clinicians should be aware of radiation doses and their legal responsibility as referrers.
An Introduction to the Approaches of Novel Drug Delivery Systems for Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS)
The currently available anti HIV agents have several drawbacks such as short half life, low bioavailability, poor CNS penetration and
retention, hepatic first pass metabolism, undesirable side effects and frequent dosing regimen.
Contralateral Delayed Acute Subdural Hematoma Following Evacuation of a Chronic Subdural Hematoma with Burr-Hole Craniotomy and Continuous Closed System Drainage: Case Report and Literature Review
Chronic subdural hematoma (CSDH) is a relatively frequent problem in neurologic or neurosurgical practice. Treatments for CSDH are well established and provide positive postoperative outcome; however, some atypical postoperative complications can occur.
