The role of homologous serum eye drops in the management of scleral melting after proton beam therapy, a case report
To describe a case of a 39-years-old man with marked scleral thinning secondary to proton beam therapy for choroidal melanoma. Observations: The patient underwent multiple unsuccessful reconstructive surgical procedures complicated by failure and enucleation was finally suggested. However, he started improving following homologous serum drops administration
Antibodies Anti-Proteins of Larrea Divaricata Cav. Present Opsonic Capacity on Candida Albicans Atcc 36801 and Neutralize its Cytotoxic and Immunoevasive Properties
Candida albicans is an opportunistic agent that can produce systemic infections in immunosuppressed patients. By varying
its cell wall antigens this fungus can evade the immunological response by varying its cell wall antigens. On the other hand,
Larrea divaricata Cav. (Jarilla) is a widely spread plant in America and it is used in folk medicine to treat several pathologies.
It has been shown that antibodies against Jarilla proteins of crude extract (JPCE) cross-react with proteins of other microorganisms such as Gram-negative bacteria.
Disseminated Blastomycosis: A Case Report
Blastomycosis is known for its propensity to mimic other illnesses, which often leads to incorrect or delayed treatment. Here we present a case report of a patient working in Wisconsin who was misdiagnosed as Tuberculosis since he was an Indian. The patient was not evaluated on endemic grounds for Blastomyces where he was working for couple of years. After he developed skin lesions along with increased shortness of breath, lesions were evaluated which showed large yeast cells resembling Blastomyces. The treating pulmonologist evaluated his occupational history and was revealed with endemicity for Blastomyces.
Case Series of 141 Melanomas Diagnosed and Managed over 5 years by an Australian Dermatologist: with a Suggested Approach to Suspected Pigmented Lesions
Melanoma is one of the most fatal disorders dermatologists have to diagnose and treat. Despite its prevalence and seriousness, there has been no protocol with consensus suggesting systematic approach for diagnosis and treatment of pigmented lesions. A series of 141 melanomas diagnosed and managed over five years in an Australian dermatology clinicare presented. Also a systematic approach has been suggested for the management of suspicious pigmented lesions and melanomas. It is hoped that this paper provides a platform to open discussion for the development of the best systematic approach.
The Combination of Shear Wave Elastography and ELF Test in a Single Score Improves the Diagnostic Specificity for Liver Fibrosis Prediction
Forty patients with CHDs who received liver biopsy to stage fibrosis and 12 normal subjects performed also shear wave elastography (SWE) and ELF-test. We chose two different outcomes for histological fibrosis (F0-F1 vs F2-F4) and (F0-F2 vs F3-F4). ELF-test and SWE were independent predictors, categorized using ROC analysis. Two scores called SCORE1 and SCORE2 were devised.
The Common Causes of Death among Pregnant Women in Iran: A Study on Cadavers Referred to Legal Medicine Organization
Maternal mortality remains now as an important leading cause of death for women of reproductive age whole of the world.
However, our knowledge is very little of the main causes of death among our pregnant women needing more population-based assessments.
Hence, the present study aimed to determine causes of maternal death in the cases referred to Legal Medicine.
Cognitive Enhancers Derived from Edible Crops
The concept of an effective cognitive boosting nootropic supplement is gaining traction with consumers, neuroscientists and regulators
alike and it is therefore unsurprising that scientifically validated Nootropics are highly prized. New research demonstrates edible crops
could be useful sources to mine for new nootropics; plant extracts enriched with an array of cognitive enhancing metabolites. There is merit
in investigating these plant species. Metadata has identifies consuming specific fruit and vegetables positively affects cognitive function;
therefore these same edible crop plants present as opportunities for developing nootropic formulations. This hypothesis is supported
by positive data obtained through clinical testing [e.g. extracts of tomato (Solanum lycopersicum), herbs from the Genus Salvia, cocoa
(Theobroma), tea (Camellia sinensisor) and coffee (Coffea Arabica). This review will discuss clinically tested cognitive enhancers derived
from edible crop species and discuss their use alongside other classes of nootropics.
Treatment of Acute Corneal Hydrops with Full-thickness Penetrating Subtotal Keratoplasty (PKP): Clinical Case
The article is devoted to the description of the successful treatment of acute keratoconus by the method of full-thickness penetrating subtotal keratoplasty (PKP).
Huge Capillary Haemangioma of the Nasal Fossae
Hemangiomas are frequently observed lesions in the head and neck region, those of the nasal cavity and sinuses are very rare. They are divided into two histological types, capillary and cavernous ones
Squamous Cell Carcinoma of the External Auditory Canal: Case Report
Squamous cell carcinoma of the external auditory canal may masquerade as an infective process causing late diagnosis. A delay in treatment as a result of missed diagnosis would carry a poor prognosis as the disease progresses to an advanced stage. We present a case of a man with history of chronic otorrhea, who developed left sided otalgia associated with hearing loss. otoscopic examination shows a mass in her left ear and pus discharge which was initially treated as an infection. The biopsy of the mass was proven to be squamous cell carcinoma. High index of suspicion is necessary when encountering patients presenting with a mass in the ear canal with prior history of chronic otorrhea or cholesteatoma. Proper tissue biopsy is crucial. Early diagnosis is required for better prognosis for the patient.
Endocardial Approach for Substrate Ablation in Brugada Syndrome: Epicardial, Endocardial or Transmural Substrate?
Background: Radiofrequency ablation (RFA) in Brugada syndrome (BrS) has been performed both endocardially and epicardially. The substrate in BrS is thus unclear.
Objectives: To investigate the functional endocardial substrate and its correlation with clinical, electrophysiological and ECG findings in order to guide an endocardial ablation.
Methods: Thirteen patients (38.7±12.3 years old) with spontaneous type 1 ECG BrS pattern, inducible VF with programmed ventricular stimulation (PVS) and syncope without prodromes were enrolled. Before to endocardial mapping the patients underwent flecainide testing with the purpose of measuring the greatest ST-segment elevation for to be correlated with the size and location of substrate in the electro-anatomic map
Thyroid Cancer Incidence and Clinicopathological Differences in Patients with End-Stage Renal Failure
Aim: In the present study we aimed to determine the prevalence of thyroid cancer and the clinicopathological properties of papillary thyroid cancer (PTC) in a patient population undergoing dialysis for end-stage renal failure (ESRF).
Material and Methods: We retrospectively reviewed all thyroid ultrasonography (USG) examinations performed between January 2007 and December 2015 to determine the incidence of nodular thyroid disease in ESRF and normal patient populations. For both patient groups, differences between patient and tumor characteristics were evaluated in patients diagnosed to have PTC.
Neuropsycological Function, Insight, and Treatment Adherence among Patients with Schizophrenia
Research has suggested that poor insight in patients with schizophrenia is associated with poorer treatment compliance. One factor ontributing to poor insight may be neurocognitive deficits. The aim of the current study is to explore the relationship between cognitive insight, clinical insight, treatment adherence, executive functions and sustained attention within patients with schizophrenia. The study was conducted on 41 patients with schizophrenia using the Beck cognitive insight scale, the schedule for assessment of insight, the drug attitude inventory and two neuropsychological tests.
Novel analytical technologies of Quality in the Sheep & Goat Dairy Sector
France, Greece, Italy, and Spain the major sheep and goat milk producers in Europe, got the initiative through an interim of 30 years (1985 – 2015), to organize - through IDF - 7 symposiums aiming at the upgrade of the Dairy Sector. One major interest was the milk quality. Stepwise, the efforts followed cow milk structural development in organizing the testing laboratory, the definition of quality in composition (fat, protein, lactose, total solids), in Hygienic (Total Bacteria Count, Somatic Cell Count, antibiotics residues and Aflatoxin M1 contamination), adulteration with water and detection of milk species. EU, by Decision 2002/657/EC, defined the rules for the Directive 96/23/EC, enumerated the testing methods, the demands in sampling procedures, the minimum limits of performance, the quality control (ISO 17025) and the interpretation of results. The equivalency of results from different laboratories, through ISO 17025, demanded the application of ISO analytical standards.
