This study aimed to determine the protein intake and percentage of organ weight in broilers fed rations containing fermented leaves and seeds from the rubber tree (FLSRT) as a substitute for soybean meal. Variability of Morphological Markers of Cone and Seeds in Natural Populations and Artificial Plantations of the Scots Pine (Pinus sylvestris L.)

The variability of morphological markers of the reproductive organs in seven natural populations and nine artificial plantations of the Scots pine of Ukrainian Polissya (Volyn, Rivne and Kyiv regions) was studied. In Vitro Antioxidant Activity of Aqueous Extracts from the Atemoya Fruit (Peel, Pulp, and Seed): Correlation of Their Protein, Carbohydrate, and Phenolic Compound Contents

The properties of several fruits still remain unevaluated, with regard to being the source of antioxidant compounds, one of such fruits being atemoya. In this study, three parts (seed, pulp, and peel) of atemoya were submitted to extraction. Five water volume ratios (1:1, 1:2, 1:4, 1:8, and 1:10) were used in relation to the same material mass rendered, thus, five extracts from each part.

Production and Quality Evaluation of Maize Chips (Kokoro) Produced from Maize and Whole Limabean Seed Flour Blends

This study investigated the proximate, mineral, and sensory properties of the composite flour and maize snack (kokoro) produced at different ratio of 100:0, 95:5, 90:10, 85:15, 80:20 respectively. The blends were reconstituted into a thick paste, manually moulded into kokoro stick and deep fried in hot vegetable oil. The kokoro and the flour blends were analysed for their proximate, mineral and sensory attributes. The result showed that there was a significant difference (p< 0.05) in the proximate composition in all the blends.

Proteomic Analysis in Response to Germination in Ceiba pentandra (Kapok) Seeds

1-D, 2-D gel electrophoresis, mass spectrometry and bioinformatics analysis were established and utilized to examine the changes in protein expressions associated with germination of Ceiba pentandra seeds.The change in protein pattern was analysed by 1-D and 2-D gel electrophoresis for better separation and to ascertain the pattern of protein mobilization during germination.

Causes of Morbidity and Mortality of Wildlife Species Presented to a Wildlife Clinic in East Tennessee, USA, 2000–2011

To determine the causes of wildlife morbidity and mortality in East Tennessee, we performed a retrospective analysis using 14,303 records from cases presented to the wildlife clinic of the University of Tennessee between 2000 and 2011. The cases were first categorized into herptile (includes reptiles and amphibians), mammal, or avian and then classified into 1 of 20 groups based on the primary admitting/presenting sign. The top reasons for presentation were trauma, found abandoned/orphaned, hit by automobile, cat-related injury, and dog-related injury. Overall mortality was 45.3% for the herptile cases, 57.6% for mammal cases, and 65.1% for avian cases. There are a variety of reasons animals were presented to the clinic, and some appear to be attributed to anthropogenic factors such as automobiles (n = 1253) and habitat destruction (n = 218), while the origin of others, such as trauma and disease remain unknown. This study confirms the importance of monitoring wildlife morbidity and mortality as an indicator of ecosystem health and of focusing efforts to reduce the anthropogenic threat on native habitats and resident wildlife populations.

Unusual Presentation of Flexor Tendon Sheath Massive Ganglion

We report a unusual case of a flexor tendon sheath ganglion in a 78 years old, right hand dominant female presented with right little finger large multiloculated swelling involving the whole volar aspect of the little finger leaving the patient with fears of malignancy, swollen finger with limited mobility and distal tip numbness.
