An Unexpected Diagnosis of Plasmacytoma of The Thyroid: A Case Report and Review of The Literature
Plasmacytoma is a malignant proliferation of plasma cells that can arise in the bone marrow (osseous) and in the soft tissues. Extramedullary plasmacytomas most commonly occur in the upper respiratory tract. Thyroid involvement is rare. In this report, we describe a new case plasmacytoma of the thyroid gland in a 60-year-old man with a history of multinodular goiter present for several years and an unexpected rapid increase of the mass associated to dysphagia, dyspnea, and dysphonia. Histopathological examination of surgical specimen, along with immunohistochemical studies, unexpectedly led to the diagnosis of plasmacytoma.
We also briefly summarize the last 30 years of literature on thyroid plasmacytoma and review the salient characteristics of this rare condition.
Surgical Management of Asymptomatic Hyperparathyroidism: Long-Term Follow-Up
Background: Primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT) is a frequently diagnosed endocrine disease and nowadays it is asymptomatic in the majority of patients. The management of asymptomatic PHPT is still debated in some cases, although
there are evidences that asymptomatic patients may have improved outcomes after curative surgery. In this paper we show
one of the longest follow-ups of surgically treated asymptomatic PHPT, focusing on skeletal long-term effects of surgery.
Methods: We included in the study 21 patients that underwent parathyroidectomy for asymptomatic PHPT at our Institution from 2006 to 2010 with a complete follow-up at 10 years. Data about age, BMI, preoperative serum and urinary
calcium, vitamin D, alkaline phosphatase parathormone, bone densitometry, surgical procedure and histological examination were collected and analyzed.
Results: At follow-up we observed a normalization of PTH, serum calcium and alkaline phosphatase in all patients. Moreover, in all cases the T-score at 1 year increased significantly both at lumbar spine and femoral neck and this is maintained
at long-term follow-up.
Conclusions: Parathyroidectomy can be proposed as a safe therapeutical option in the majority of cases of asymptomatic
PHPT considering the good results of surgery in terms of bone demineralization reduction
A Rare Case of Albrights Hereditary Osteodystrophy presenting as Recurrent Hypocalcemic Tetany
An internist with an eagle’s eye can diagnose many hidden diseases through careful examination. One such hereditary
metabolic disorder is Albright’s Hereditary Osteodystrophy (AHO). Characteristic presentations in an individual affected
by AHO were short stature, obesity, mild mental retardation and brachydactyly especially of 4th and 5th digits, which
are the phenotypic features of genetic mutation. Pseudohypoparathyroidism (PHP) is characterized by inability of the
body to respond appropriately to parathormone, mainly characterized by hypocalcaemia, increased serum parathormone
concentration, insensitivity to the biological activity of parathormone and hyperphosphatemia. AHO when seen in
association with resistance to parathormone (PTH), it is called PHP. Here is a case report of 22-year-old female patient
with AHO with distinctive physical characteristics who presented to us with recurrent hypocalcaemic tetan
Effect of the Seasons on the Change of Morphological, Histo-Cytological and Hormonal Parameters of the Thyroid Gland in Cattle in Algeria
This study was carried out to study the peculiarities of the topography, the macrostructure and the analysis of the structural and functional organization patterns of the parenchyma of the thyroid gland of dairy cows (local breed from the Souk Ahras region, Algeria). A complex of macroscopic and histological techniques was used, as well as immunohistochemical staining of thyroid gland sections to identify localization characteristics of thyrocyte populations in the parenchyma.
Cranial Vault Tumor Revealing Metastatic Thyroid Carcinoma
Distant metastases from follicular thyroid carcinoma are not uncommon, but bone localization in the cranial vault is extremely rare.
Although these metastases have a poor prognosis, early diagnosis and appropriate treatment can improve quality of life. We report a
case of follicular thyroid carcinoma revealed by a metastasis of the cranial vault initially diagnosed as meningioma.
Mediastinitis Revealing Primitive Thyroid Tuberculosis
Tuberculosis of the thyroid gland is very rarely diagnosed with a prevalence of 0.1-0.3 %. According to Ghosh, et al., the rarity of this localization is due to the bactericidal action of colloid and also the high iodine content and high blood flow in thyroid tissue
Synchronous Papillary Carcinoma in Thyroglossal Duct Cyst and Thyroid Gland Associated to Untreated Midline Cervical Cleft: A Case Report
Thyroglossal duct cyst is the most common anomaly in thyroid development. Majority is benign, but 1% may be malignant. Papillary carcinoma is the most frequent thyroid cancer. The synchronous occurrence of thyroglossal duct cyst and thyroid carcinoma is rare and the association with another congenital malformation is extremely rarer. A 41-year-old woman was referred to our department with complaints of a midline cervical abnormality. Clinico-radiological evaluation suggested a thyroglossal duct cyst with non-palpable nodules of thyroid gland and a midline cleft with fibrous cord. Sistrunk’s procedure along with a total thyroidectomy associated to an excision and Z-plasty closure of this congenital cervical cleft were performed, followed by post-operative radioiodine ablation.
Trends in Thyroid Malignancies in Accra Ghana: A Retrospective Histopathological Review in the Department of Pathology (1994-2013), Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital
Malignancies of the thyroid gland are common in certain parts of the world. In Ghana there are no available data on the trends and gender characteristics of thyroid malignancies (TMs). The aim of this retrospective study was to determine the trends and gender characteristics of TMs in the Department of Pathology.
Selenium Supplementation in Obese Patients with Subclinical Hypothyroidism and Type 2 Diabetes
Selenium (Se) is a trace element present in many foods. Selenium-protein co-factor plays a critical anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory role in thyroid function, but quite recently its ability to prevent adipocyte hypertrophy and adipogenesis has also been evaluated. The aim of our study was to assess whether thyroid function, as well as, body mass index (BMI) and body composition might improve in Se-treated obese patients as compared to those getting placebo (P).
Thyroid Cancer Incidence and Clinicopathological Differences in Patients with End-Stage Renal Failure
Aim: In the present study we aimed to determine the prevalence of thyroid cancer and the clinicopathological properties of papillary thyroid cancer (PTC) in a patient population undergoing dialysis for end-stage renal failure (ESRF).
Material and Methods: We retrospectively reviewed all thyroid ultrasonography (USG) examinations performed between January 2007 and December 2015 to determine the incidence of nodular thyroid disease in ESRF and normal patient populations. For both patient groups, differences between patient and tumor characteristics were evaluated in patients diagnosed to have PTC.
Scalp, Skull, Lung and Bone Metastasis from Follicular Thyroid Carcinoma - A Rare Case Report
Concurrent scalp, skull, lung and bone metastasis from follicular thyroid carcinoma is a very rare event. We herein present the case of a 37- year’s old lady, who presented to us with huge scalp swelling that proved to be metastasis from a follicular thyroid carcinoma. The metastatic workup disclosed bilateral lung metastasis and additional metastasis in right iliac crest and 6th rib. The course of her disease was relentless. Although follicular thyroid carcinoma has an excellent prognosis, the presence of metastatic disease leads to a very dismal prognosis.
Treatment of vitamin D deficiency in children and adolescents
Both high prevalence of poor vitamin D status and obesity in children and adolescents are known health problems, but there is not enough information about adequate dose of vitamin D to treat these children.
Dermoid Cyst of Submental Region: A Case Report
Dermoid cysts are uncommon clinicopathological lesions of developmental origin. Their etiology is not yet clear and can be associated with entrapment of ectodermal and mesodermal components when the 1st and 2nd branchial arches of each side fuse in the midline. The entrapped tissues then undergo proliferation and cystic transformation.
Mckittrick-Wheelock Syndrome and Diabetes Insipidus
Secretory villous adenoma is characterized with watery diarrhea, which may lead to dehydration, with resulting volume depletion, electrolyte imbalance, circulatory failure and renal dysfunction. We hereby report a case of villous adenoma associated with severe electrolyte imbalance complicated by diabetes insipidus.
