Can Vitamin D Deficiency be a Risk Factor for Coronary Artery Disease? A Large Cross-Sectional Study of Patients Referred to Cardiovascular Clinic

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is one of the most common causes of mortality and morbidity worldwide.Coronary artery disease (CAD) is the most common form of CVD. To prevent CAD we need to assess the risk of future CAD in all patients referred for cardiovascular care, but each of the several available systems for risk assessment has its own limitations. Dry Eye Evaluation in Saudi Patients with Vitamin D Deficiency

This study included 75 patients with vitamin D deficiency (group 1), and 25 healthy subjects (group 2). All subjects completed ocular surface disease index (OSDI) questionnaire and underwent to a full ophthalmological examination. The dry eye was assessed in this order: tear break-up time (TBUT), corneal fluorescein staining scoring using the Oxford Schema, and anesthetized Schirmer test (Schirmer II). Measurement of serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D level was done using Enzyme Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA) in the laboratory. All patients were recruited from College of Applied Medical Sciences, King Saud University, and Dwaak Medical Center, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, by nonrandomized convenience sam¬pling method from February to April 2017.

The Effects of Vitamin D on Obesity, Insulin Resistance and Type 2 Diabetes

Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin. It is also referred to as a steroid hormone with an active form that can bind to receptors. The main way to obtain vitamin D is its synthetization on the skin with the effect of ultraviolet light. It is activated in the body by two hydroxylation reactions in the liver and kidneys. Vitamin D is said to have other effects besides those on the bone metabolism. Vitamin D deficiency is a global social health problem. It is associated with cardiovascular diseases, obesity, metabolic syndrome, type 2 diabetes, various types of cancer, immune deficiencies and increased mortality. It is frequently observed in obese individuals. A possible molecular mechanism of the relationship between obesity and vitamin D deficiency may be associated with the metabolism in mature adipocytes, oxidative stress, inflammation and the gene expression regulation capacity of vitamin D which is related to the adipogenesis process. Vitamin D may lead to an increase in insulin secretion and a decrease in insulin resistance by regulating the immune system. Inflammatory cytokine production is thought to be one of the mechanisms of action of vitamin D on insulin resistance. Inflammatory cytokines appear to be associated with obesity and insulin resistance. Low levels of vitamin D may cause disruption of insulin secretion. Vitamin D may be involved in β-cell secretion activity and changes in tissue response to insulin. There is a relationship between inadequate 25(OH)D levels and β-cell dysfunction. Vitamin D may have beneficial effects on β-cell function by suppressing the renin-angiotensin system. Based on all this information, it may be concluded that vitamin D is associated with obesity, insulin resistance and diabetes, and vitamin D deficiency may form the basis for these conditions.

Development and Optimization of an LC-MS/MS Method for Dosage Form of Ergocalciferol (Vitamin D2 ) in Human Plasma

Accurate measurement of ergocalciferol in biological samples has become easier using high-end mass spectra. Currently, various LCMS/MS methods have been developed to quantify ergocalciferol. Use of LC-MS/MS has accomplished to develop an accurate method that could quantify ergocalciferol in a large number of samples where it should be analyzed in the blood immediately after dosage. The objective of this study is to optimize chromatographic conditions and evaluate the LC-MS/MS method for accurate quantification of the dosage form of ergocalciferol in human plasma. Extraction and separation of ergocalciferol in human plasma was achieved using methanol liquid-liquid extraction and by a reverse phase C8 column, respectively

Evaluation of Serum Vitamin D: An Institutional Study in Mumbai

Aim: The aim of the study was to evaluate the levels of serum 25(OH)D levels in patients to identify the average vitamin D levels, the incidence of insufficiency and deficiency amongst the patients reporting to a dental hospital in Mumbai. Methods: Serum 25(OH)D levels of 100 randomly selected patients who reported to Nair Hospital Dental College in Mumbai were assessed to evaluate the vitamin D status. Serum levels below 10 ng/mL were categorized as “deficiency “and between 29-11ng/mL were categorized as “insufficiency” of vitamin D.

Development of Severe Hypophosphatemia from Acquired Fanconi Syndrome during Treatment with Abiraterone

The first patient was a 77 year old man who had been on abiraterone for 12 months before his phosphorous was checked. At that point, it was 0.6 mg/dl, which is severely decreased. A full work up for hypophosphatemia showed normal parathyroid hormone and 25-hydroxyvitamin D. A urine study showed inappropriate excretion of phosphorous along with aminoaciduria and normoglycemic glucosuria.
