Adrenal Incidentalomas - From Diagnosis to Follow-Up: Endocrine and Imaging Features at Diagnosis and Over Time

Adrenal incidentalomas (AIs) are frequent and although most of them are asymptomatic and benign, some do need treatment. The AIs follow-up has to be as sharp as to avoid missing pathology and to avoid harm and anxiety induced by the follow-up itself. The Use of Near-Infrared Spectroscopy in the Sport-Scientific Context

The focus of this research is aimed specifically at the application of near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) in exercise and sport science. NIRS is able to monitor the performance of muscle and cerebral tissue and evaluate their role during physical activity. By monitoring tissue oxygenation, an NIRS device is useful in several areas, which may benefit from its applications.

The Impact of Cerebral Amyloid Angiopathy in Lewy Body Dementia: A Neuropathological Study with Magnetic Resonance Imaging Correlations

Cerebral amyloid angiopathy (CAA) is frequently associated to Alzheimer’s disease (AD) but can also occur in Lewy body dementia (LBD). The present post-mortem study compares the incidence and the topographic distribution of small cerebrovascular lesions in LBD brains without and with severe CAA (LBD-CAA).

Cubic Averaging Aggregation Operators with Multiple Attributes Group Decision Making Problem

The group decision making is a very useful technique for ranking the group of alternatives, the cubic averaging operator is new tool in group decision making problems. In this article, we develop a series of new operators so called cubic weighted averaging (CWA) operator, cubic ordered weighted averaging (COWA) operator and cubic hybrid averaging (CHA) operator. We also discussed some particular cases and properties of these operators. Furthermore, we apply the proposed aggregation operators to deal with multiple attribute group decision making in which decision information takes the form of cubic numbers. Finally, we used some practical examples to illustrate the validity and feasibility of the proposed methods by comparing with other methods.

Ultrasound as a New Imaging Tool to Assess Pathological Change of Joints in Preclinical Mouse Models of Osteoarthritis

Murine osteoarthritis (OA) models are important for exploring OA pathology and treatment in the pre-clinical study. Longitudinal in vivo imaging modalities, including X-ray, computed tomography, and magnetic resonance imaging, are commonly used diagnostic tools in OA clinic, while end-point histomorphometry analysis is the major outcome measurement in the pre-clinical study because clinical imaging modalities have limited resolution for small animals.

Mitochondrial Production of Perhydroxyl Radical (HO2 • ) as Inducer of Aging and Age-Related Pathologies

All organisms age, in the search of the universal mechanisms of aging Barja analyzed results obtained with various species of mammals and birds and concluded that only two known factors correlate in the right sense (inversely) with animal longevity in vertebrates: the long life span is associated with (a) low rates of mitochondrial reactive oxygen species production, and (b) low degree of fatty acid polyunsaturation of cellular membranes including the mitochondrial ones [Barja (2014) Prog Mol Biol Transl Sci. 127:1-27].

Rupture of a Giant Caesarean Scar Endometriosis Nodule - A Case Report and Literature Review

Abdominal wall endometriosis is a rare condition occurring after caesarean section. A small painful nodule or lump near post caesarean scar is the common presentation. Large size endometrial nodules in anterior abdominal wall are uncommon and bleeding is very rare complication. In a thirty two years female a giant size endometrial nodule developed in a post caesarean scar. This patient presented as emergency during menstruation because of pain and lump with bluish discolouration. This case is reported for post caesarean scar large size endometriosis with extravasation of blood in surrounding anterior abdominal wall. This giant size endometriosis in anterior abdominal wall involving rectus abdominis muscle was successfully excised with a margin. The residual large size defect was repaired using polypropylene mesh.

Osteo-Articular Complications in a Pediatric Sickle Cell Disease Population - Imaging Value

Sickle cell disease (SCD) is the most frequent of a group of conditions known as haemoglobinopathies. The disease is an autosomal recessive genetic disorder, characterized by abnormal haemoglobin (Hemoglobin S) that under certain conditions polymerizes resulting in microvascular occlusions. This pictorial review illustrates the osteo-articular manifestations associated with sickle-cell disease encountered in children in our institution with at least one Haematology appointment in 2013/2014. Osteo-articular manifestations with imaging findings were reported in 28 out of 97 patients. The most frequent complications and those that required hospital care were painful vaso-occlusive crisis and femoral head osteomyelitis.

Potentials, Limitations and Future Directions of MR Contrast Media in Ablation Therapies

ImagingIntroductionMR contrast media have become an indispensable part of magnetic resonance (MR) imaging, but their roles in ablation therapies are still controversial. The interactions between physical/biological properties of MR contrast media (Longitudinal=T1, transverse=T2 and susceptibility=T2* relaxation times) and diseased tissues (perfusion, edema, hemorrhage and coagulative necrosis) play important roles in differentiating pathologic and ablated tissues.

Jejunal Adenocarcinoma: An Unusual Cause of Small Bowel Obstruction

We report the case of a 52 year old man having no previous abdominal surgery who presented with small bowel obstruction. Computerised tomography showed mid jejunal obstruction, however, the cause of the obstruction could not be diagnosed radiologically. Laparotomy was performed and the obstruction was found to be due to a small annular jejunal tumour.

The Quality of Abdominal Radiographs at East Surrey Hospital, United Kingdom

Abdominal radiographs are routinely used in the acute care setting as they can be performed relatively quickly and can help guide patient management by providing important clinical information. The quality of the radiograph itself has a significant impact on how useful it is for diagnosing or excluding abdominal pathology and whether or not repeats or further imaging is required.

Effect of Re-Aging on Strength, Corrosion and Dry Sliding Wear Behavior of 7075 Aluminum Alloy

The effect of re-ageing on hardness, pin-on-disc sliding wear and corrosive behavior of 7075 aluminum alloy is studied. The as cast alloy was solution treated at 470 °C for 2hrs and aged at 120 °C for 6 and 24hrs respectively. Wear tests were conducted on a pin-on-disc- wear testing machine with die steel rotating disc.

Anodic Porous Alumina Array for Cyanine Fluorophore Cy3 Confinement

Self-organized anodic porous alumina films with hexagonal pore lattice have attracted a considerable attention for biological arrays and confinement of various organic probes dyes in solutions. A molecular structure with axial symmetry in bis-heterocyclic indole chains and conjugate system, such as cyanine fluorophore Cy3 dye, was investigated here with respect to its fluorescence when loaded in the anodic alumina pores.

Recent Developments in Human Odor Detection Technologies

Human odor detection technologies have drawn attention due to the wide possibility of potential applications they open up in areas such as biometrics, criminal investigation and forensics, search for survivors under rubble, and security checkpoint screening. Gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) has been the most successful and powerful analytical approach developed to date for human odor analysis, and hundreds of human odorants have been identified using this tool.

Characteristic Human Scent Compounds Trapped on Natural and Synthetic Fabrics as analyzed by SPME-GC/MS

The collection of human odor volatiles is of interest to forensic applications as a path to investigate canine scent discriminations in legal investigations. A study using a selected array of previously identified human odor compounds has been conducted to determine the retention and release capabilities of five (5) natural and synthetic fabric types, cotton (mercerized fabric and gauze matrix), polyester, rayon and wool.
