Impact of Inflammation on Atrial Fibrillation in patients with Metabolic Syndrome

Inflammation has been involved in the pathogenesis of both metabolic syndrome (MS) and atrial fibrillation (AF). The magnitude of elevations in plasma C-reactive protein (CRP) a marker of inflammation is probably related to atrial structural remodeling and impaired atrial function. In patient with MS, limited data exist regarding impact of plasma levels of inflammatory markers, such as C-reactive protein on the: type of AF and atrial structural and functional remodeling.

Complex Chronic Patients and Atrial Fibrillation: Association with Cognitive Deterioration and Heart Failure

In developed countries, around 3-5% of the people could be identified as chronic complex patients, and they are increasingly at risk of atrial fibrillation (AF) and cognitive impairment. The main objective of this study was to present the current findings on the association between AF and cognitive impairment and mortality risk among chronic complex outpatients (CCP). A multicenter and prospective cohort study of mortality incidence was carried out from 1 January 2013 to 30 September 2016 in a sample of 932 adult patients registered as CCP. To predict hazard ratios, mean survival time, and survival probabilities, a multivariate Cox regression was used.

Isoproterenol Increases BIS and Arousal during Catheter Ablation for Atrial Fibrillation

Isoproterenol is frequently used to test therapeutic effectiveness post- catheter ablation procedure for atrial fibrillation. Preliminary data suggests that administration of isoproterenol increases the Bispectral index (BIS), implicating the CNS stimulatory effects of isoproterenol.

Vasculitis Associated with Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia

A patient is present who has chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) and developed a vasculitis involving the skin and large vessels along with immune complex mediated glomerulosclerosis. Both vasculitis and immune complex nephritis are rare manifestations of CLL.

Could Non-Linear Heart Rate Variability Analysis of Short RR Intervals Series Give Clinically Valuable Information in Heart Disease?

New analytic methods based on nonlinear system theory have been developed to characterize the nonlinear features in HR dynamics. It is known from long time series (24h ECG recordings) that patients with chronic heart failure or stable coronary heart disease have altered fractal organization in heartbeat dynamics. During such long-time series, many confounding could limit the assessment of autonomic functions.

Unexplained severe lactic acidosis in emergency medicine

Case report A 49-year-old previously healthy man was admitted to the ICU after cardiac arrest following a short history with headache, blurred speech and reduced consciousness. After cardiopulmonary resuscitation perfusion rythm was regained, but the patient didn`t regain consciousness.
