Ecological Risk Assessment of Desalination Plants Discharges on the Marine Environment Red Sea, Egypt

Desalination has become one of the main alternatives to compensate for water shortages. Although seawater desalination is expensive and has many environmental risks, it is still an important option to compensate for water shortages in Egypt. The discharge of liquid waste (especially heavy metals) from the station into the sea has a negative impact on the water, so the spatial distribution of heavy metals (lead, cadmium, and copper) shows high concentrations near the outlets of both AlQusayr and the port of Al-Qusayr. As for higher quantities of heavy metals - higher than the standard values - such as (Cu, Pb, Cd), they are classified as seawater pollutants, whether they show evidence of toxicity or not. Advance Indexed Model Analysis of Heavy Metals Pollution of River Ureje, Ado Ekiti, Nigeria

The results obtained from heavy metal pollution assessment of River Ureje using Heavy Pollution Index (HPI) and Contamination Index (Cd ). HPI values at upstream and downstream point of the river, Cd, Pb, Cr had high pollution load that exceeded threshold value of 100 while Mn, Cu, Zn, Ni had low pollution index which are below threshold value. This indicated that high pollution status of Cd, Pb, Cr were observed because they compete with other essential metallic cations for binding sites and inhibits enzyme activity while there is no pollution presence of Zn, Mn, Ni, Cu. Cd value results in both upstream and downstream point revealed that Zn, Cd, Cu, Pb had a low contamination index below <1 contamination value and tends to show no effect on aquatic environment and drinking water quality. However, Cr, Ni had medium contamination compared to (Cd=1-3) Cd value, this indicates slight contamination of these heavy metals and have slight effect on drinking water quality and aquatic life present while Manganese had high Cd value compared to (Cd>3) Cd value which to tends have high effect on drinking water quality and aquatic system. In conclusions, this study revealed that High level of HPI above critical index value was observed for Cd, Cr, Pb while Mn shows high Cd far above contamination index value.

Removal of Heavy Metals from Groundwater by Hydrous Ferric Oxide-Modified Peanut Shell

This study reports the adsorption capacity of copper Cu (II) and nickel Ni (II) of biochar obtained from peanut shell. The kinetics and equilibrium of biosorption were examined in detail. Two kinetic models (pseudo-first order and pseudo-second order) were used to correlate the experimental data and to determine the kinetic parameters. Two well-known adsorption isotherms were chosen to describe the biosorption equilibrium (Langmuir and Freundlich). The equilibrium isotherms showed that modified peanut shells possess high affinity, sorption capacity for Cu (II) and Ni (II) ions, sorption capacities of 37.443 mg/g Cu (II) and 28.626 mg/g Ni (II) biomass, respectively. All results showed that peanut shells biomass is an attractive, alternative low-cost bio sorbent for removal of heavy metal ions from aqueous media, therefore biomass materials find good application prospects.

Outcome of Impedance Bipolar Radiofrequency Ablation (Novasure) for the Management of Heavy Menstrual Bleeding in Women with Scarred Uterus

26 women with HMB and scarred uterus were included in the study. Data regarding procedure completion, complications, hospital stay, success rate and failure of procedure necessitating hysterectomy was obtained. The majority of the patients had one C/S, 5 had two, one had 3 and two had 4 previous C/S scars. The procedure was completed in 84% of cases. Success rate was 68% (15/22) in the scarred uterus group and 32% (31.8%) (7/22) needed hysterectomy due to continuing heavy periods or pain. One woman in the scarred uterus group had uterine perforation (3.8%) needing overnight admission, all the rest of cases were done as a day procedure. A third (7/22)(32%) of women required a hysterectomy for persistent heavy bleeding or pelvic pain, all were with previous one C/S. The histology of the removed uterus confirmed leiomyomas with or without adenomyosis in all the cases explaining the possible cause of failed Novasure ablation.

Estimation of the Abundances of Heavy Elements Isotopes in Neutron Stars

The cataclysmic merger of two rotating neutron stars in an explosive event is called a Kilonova. Such an event (17 August 2017) leads to the production of more than an Earth’s mass of precious metals like gold, platinum, uranium, and many of the rare elements. The merger led to the emission of gravitational waves that travel with the speed of light.

Heavy Element Accumulation in Aquatic Beetles of the Genus Enochrus (Coleoptera: Hydrophilidae) in Erzurum Province

In the present study, fourteen heavy elements (Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, As, Se, Br, Sr, Pb) accumulation in sediment, water and Enochrus spp. species organs (total body) were evaluated. For this purpose, water, sediment and Enochrus spp. were collected from nine wetland sites in Erzurum province (Turkey).

Submucous leiomyoma and endometrial polyps are the most challenging causes of heavy menstrual flow (menorrhagia) accompanied with infertility, and other clinical issues. There are different hysteroscopic modalities for management of heavy menstrual flow caused by submucous myomas and polyps including conventional hysteroscopic resectoscopy and a novel, recent uterine hysteroscopic morcellator.

Esophageal Cancer and Bisphosphonates

At the beginning of 2009, Dianne Wysowski of the US Food and Drug Administration summarized 23 reports of esophageal1 cancer following alendronate use. Wysowski also noted that there had been 31 cases following alendronate use in Europe and Japan and ten cases in which other bisphosphonates had been reported as concomitant or suspect treatment.

Anti-Inflammatory and Anti-Arthritic Efficacy and Safety of Purified Shilajit in Moderately Arthritic Dogs

The objective of this investigation was to evaluate the efficacy and safety of purified Shilajit in moderately arthritic dogs. Ten client-owned dogs in a randomized double-blinded study received either a placebo or Shilajit (500 mg) twice daily for a period of five months. Dogs were evaluated each month for physical condition (body weight, body temperature, heart rate, and respiration rate) and pain associated with arthritis (overall pain, pain from limb manipulation, and pain after physical exertion).
