Effect of the Seasons on the Change of Morphological, Histo-Cytological and Hormonal Parameters of the Thyroid Gland in Cattle in Algeria

This study was carried out to study the peculiarities of the topography, the macrostructure and the analysis of the structural and functional organization patterns of the parenchyma of the thyroid gland of dairy cows (local breed from the Souk Ahras region, Algeria). A complex of macroscopic and histological techniques was used, as well as immunohistochemical staining of thyroid gland sections to identify localization characteristics of thyrocyte populations in the parenchyma.

Immunohistochemical Localization of LH Receptors in Canine Splenic Hemangiosarcoma

Gonad removal has been implicated as a risk factor for the development of canine hemangiosarcoma. With gonad removal, there is a loss of negative feedback to the anterior pituitary, resulting in persistently elevated concentrations of luteinizing hormone (LH). LH receptors can be found in gonadal and extragonadal tissues, including the bladder and skin. The aim of this study was to investigate if LH receptors were expressed in canine splenic hemangiosarcoma. Splenic tumor samples submitted to the Oregon State Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory from referring veterinarians were with routine immunohistochemical methods. In addition, survival time following hemangiosarcoma diagnosis was obtained from the referring veterinarians. Five of the eight splenic hemangiosarcomas (62.5 %) were positive for LH receptor expression. LH receptor cellular localization in splenic hemangiosarcoma was cytoplasmic and granular, similar to the positive control canine skin sections (Figure 1C). There was no positive staining in the negative controls. LH receptor is expressed in a proportion of HSAs but further study need to be done to assess the significance of this finding.

Toxoplasmosis Seropositivity and Male Sex Hormones

Toxoplasmosis is a cosmopolitan disease with acute and chronic infections, caused by the obligate intracellular protozoan parasite. Toxoplasma gondii that can infect a variety of cells in almost all warm blooded animals including humans. The study aimed to determine the seroprevalence of T. gondii infection among males in Duhok city using ELISA (IgG and IgM).The relationship between toxoplasmosis and reproductive hormones including testosterone, free testosterone, and follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) levels and its association with male sterility were also investigated.

Stress-Induced Release of Eating Related Hormones in Young Women Classified as Restrained Eaters

Eating related hormones may be strongly involved in the control of food intake under stressful conditions. The development and maintenance of eating disorders such as obesity, binge eating disorder, and bulimia nervosa might be in part explained by the altered release of insulin, ghrelin or leptin in particular in vulnerable subjects such as restrained eaters. The present investigation describes the secretion of these hormones before and after stress in a sample of 44 young women, who were selected according to a high degree of dietary restraint. Hormones were analysed from blood samples which were drawn 30 and 60 minutes after a validated stressor. Ghrelin levels significantly rise after stress induction. Insulin and Leptin both significantly fall after stress. The results are discussed with regard to biological as well as psychological causes and consequences of stress related hormone release in restrained eaters.

Neurogenesis in the Dentate Gyrus of the Hippocampus Associated with Sex Hormone Levels in Female Mice

Usual fluctuations of sex hormones during the estrous cycle in female mice affect the hippocampal neurogenesis. The hippocampus also comprises many steroid receptors suggesting the modulatory effects of gonadal hormones on the hippocampal plasticity. Sex differences at the level of structure and function of the hippocampus are mostly due to the fluctuations of steroid hormones during the estrous cycle. The purpose of this study was to investigate relationship with serum sex hormone levels and the expression of glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) at different phases of the estrous cycle.

Gingival Stimulation: An Important Metabolic Regulator?

This study aimed to determine whether a relationship exists between gingival stimulation and the levels of leptin, ghrelin, insulin and glucose, which are important regulators of energy homeostasis. Blood samples for ghrelin, leptin, glucose and insulin were taken from 15 male volunteers (mean age 25.5±2.3 years; mean body mass index 24.4±2.79 kg/m2), who did not brush their teeth for one day, after a 12 h-long overnight fasting and before standard breakfast (0 min) and thereafter at 30, 60, 120 and 180 min after breakfast. After toothbrushing after dinner and after a 12 h-long overnight fasting, blood samples were taken again before standard breakfast (0 min) and then after at the same time points following tooth brushing.A significant reduction was found in the leptin levels measured at 0, 30, 60, 120 and 180 min after tooth brushing (p < 0.005). The ghrelin levels also declined at these time points but were significant at 0, 30 and 120 min (p < 0.05). Despite the reduced insulin levels at 120 and 180 min after tooth brushing (p < 0.05), no significant change was observed in the glucose levels.

Influence of Maternal Nutritional Factors on Ovarian Folliculogenesis in Cattle

Assisted reproductive technologies, such as artificial insemination and embryo transfer, have produced significant outcomes in cattle. These technologies are useful not only for improving fertility but also for increasing the rate of genetic change in beef and dairy livestock. Today, embryo transfer in cattle is both practical and commercially viable. However, bovine embryo transplantation still remains suboptimal under on-farm conditions, one of the main reasons for which may be inefficient nutritional management.

Helicobacter pylori Infection and its Potential Association with Idiopathic Hypercalciuric Urolithiasis in Pediatric Patients

A total of 150 patients categorized into 100 cases (urolithiasis-positive) with urinary stone disease, aged from 5 to 18 years, and met the characteristics of idiopathic urolithiasis in children as well as 50 controls (urolithiasis-negative) that had relatively similar demographic criteria except for idiopathic urolithiasis.

Development of Severe Hypophosphatemia from Acquired Fanconi Syndrome during Treatment with Abiraterone

The first patient was a 77 year old man who had been on abiraterone for 12 months before his phosphorous was checked. At that point, it was 0.6 mg/dl, which is severely decreased. A full work up for hypophosphatemia showed normal parathyroid hormone and 25-hydroxyvitamin D. A urine study showed inappropriate excretion of phosphorous along with aminoaciduria and normoglycemic glucosuria.

Short-term Creatine Supplementation Suppresses the Cortisol Response to a High-Intensity Swim-Sprint Workout

The primary aim of the present study was to evaluate the effects of creatine ingestion on the metabolic hormone cortisol in male swimmers. Seventeen male swimmers (24.5 ± 3.9 years) with at least 5 years of competitive swimming experience and engaged in swimming training at least 4 times per week participated in the study. Subjects supplemented with creatine (20 g/day) + maltodextrin (1g/kg/day) or maltodextrin (1g/kg/day) only for 6 days prior to a progressive swim-sprint workout. The swim-sprint workout consisted of 8 progressive 100 meter freestyle sets starting at 65% of maximal intensity leading up to a 100% maximum capacity set on the eighth and final set.
