Identification of Pyrrolidinophenone-type Designer Drugs by Gas Chromatography/ Time-of-Flight Mass Spectrometry
Use of gas chromatography (GC) combined with time-of –flight mass spectrometry (TOFMS) with soft ionization generated with three different plasma gases (i.e., Xe, Kr, Ar) was evaluated for the identification of several pyrrolidinophenone-type designer drugs that are commercially available.
Availability of Adequate Iodized Salt at Household Level and Associated Factors in Rural Communities in Laelay Maychew District, Northern Ethiopia: A Cross Sectional Study
Universal salt iodization is cost-effective, safe and sustainable strategy to ensure adequate intake of iodine by all populations. Worldwide the proportion of people consuming iodized salt dramatically increased while, the coverage of universal salt iodization is still low in Ethiopia.
Methadone and Torsade De Pointes in the Therapeutic Range
Methadone, a long-acting opioid agonist, binds to and occupies mu-opioid receptors, preventing withdrawal symptoms for 24 hours or longer, reduces craving for opioids, and, by maintaining high levels of opioid tolerance, reduces the euphoric effects of subsequent illicit opioid use. As a controlled substance with potential for abuse, methadone use is regulated in the US and other countries.
Nutritional Status of Children and their Mothers, and its Determinants in Urban Capital and Rural Highland in Papua New Guinea
In Papua New Guinea (PNG), under-five mortality rate still remains high (69 per 1,000 live birth), and infectious diseases contribute to 38% of deaths among under-five children, possibly due to not only low immunization coverage but also undernutrition.
Nanotechnology Commercialization: Prospects in India
Nanotechnology manipulates and creates matter to formulate nanometer scale materials and objects. It is an interdisciplinary field that involves a wide range of scientific and engineering disciplines, and has societal implications.
A Protocol for the Determination of the Growth Rate of Organisms Subject to Interrupted Exponential Growth
A standard laboratory procedure with cultures that grow exponentially involves regular dilution (so that the organism is never nutrient limited). When the logarithm of growth is plotted against time, exponential growth then appears as a series of parallel lines.
Amyloid beta precursor protein: forgotten facts of the most studied protein in the 21st Century*
The amyloid precursor protein (APP) is mainly known for being the precursor of the ß-amyloid peptide, which accumulates in plaques found in the brain of Alzheimer’s disease patients. Expression in different tissues and the degree of sequence identity among mammals indicate an essential and non-tissue specific physiological function.
Intent vs. Implementation—Food Allocation to Adult Males in WIC Households
The intent of the Special Supplemental Food and Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC) program is found in its name—to increase the health status of a targeted group through supplemental food. Households often contain multiple members who are categorically ineligible, including older ineligible children and adult males. This paper focuses on potential spillover of benefits to adult males.
Examination of Some Country made Smooth Bore Firearms
Present trend of the crimes in India reveals that a wide variety of firearms including factory /country made are illegally used in crimes like murder, armed robbery, riot, poaching etc. Out of the total firearms received in Tripura State Forensic Science Laboratory, Agartala for the last ten years, about 30% of the firearms are observed to be belonging to country made pistol/pipe guns.
Nutritional Aspects in Heart Failure
Heart failure (HF) is a complex clinical syndrome, of a progressive character, that has a limited prognostic factor and manifested by various extracardiac aspects. It represents a serious and growing public health problem worldwide, both for its high prevalence and the severity of its clinical manifestations, being the final common pathway of most diseases. Undernutrition is often associated with HF, especially in the later stages of the disease, and may chronically reach cardiac cachexia, a severe manifestation related to poor clinical prognosis.
Impact of Training Programme on Knowledge and Perception of Primary Health Care (PHC) Workers on Nutrition Component of Safe Motherhood Initiative in South-West Nigeria
One of the core components of Safe Motherhood Initiatives (SMI) is nutrition, yet only few studies have considered this adequately. The goal of this intervention study was to evaluate the effect of training programme on knowledge and perception of PHC health workers on nutrition components of SMIs.
Networks: Elucidating Experimental Data by Differential Protein-Protein Interactions
Recently, the pathogenesis of coronary atherosclerosis - a primary cause of cardiovascular disease – studied in a swine model has been investigated by considering in particular the effects of a high cholesterol diet lasting 8 or 16 weeks.
Pulmonic Valve Endocarditis Complicating Streptococcus pneumoniae Community- Acquired Pneumonia
Infective endocarditis is most often seen affecting the left side of the heart, with the pulmonary valve being the least frequently involved
valve. The most common organisms responsible for infective endocarditis are Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus viridans. Here
we report a rare case of pulmonary valve endocarditis due to Streptococcus pneumoniae, a rare pathogen for this setting. The clinical
features, presentation, and review of the literature are discussed.
