Effect of Selected Fodder Intervention on Milk Yield in Friesian Dairy Cows in Selected Counties in Kenya

Over three decades, the mean daily milk production per cow in these regions has remained stagnant at a mere 6 kg/day with most smallholder farmers yielding a mere 3.67 litres of milk per cow daily, it's evident that their productivity falls well below par. In an effort to address this issue, a study conducted delves into the second objective, which revolves around assessing the effects of diverse dietary supplements on milk yield across the distinct geographical areas of Nyandarua, Bomet, and Nyeri. The study involved the utilization of a supplementary feed mixture which was 400 g/kg DM of dry matter content, comprising; lucerne, greenleaf desmodium, sweet potato vines, and chicory, which was chopped and mixed in a ratio of 1:2:3:1. Supplementation was done at the following inclusion levels; T1 (0%), T2 (10%), T3 (20%) and T4 (30%) of the estimated daily dry matter intake of 4% of the live body weight of the dairy cow. A basal diet of boma Rhodes which was 400 g/kg DM of dry matter content was used. This study ran for nine weeks in each region; one week of backgrounding all the animals, followed by fourteen days of adaptation and a month and a half of data collection. The research scrutinizes the outcomes of milk production resultant from diets featuring supplementation levels ranging from 10% to 30% in Friesian dairy cows. The findings reveal that, in Bomet, There isn't a significant variation in milk production between diets exhibiting 10% and 30% supplementation, suggesting a potential plateau in response to heightened supplementation levels. Conversely, in Nyandarua, diets supplemented with 20% and 30% show no significant variance in milk yield, spotlighting the efficacy of a moderate supplementation level. Does Pre-Workout Supplement Consumption Affect Enamel Microhardness?

The aim of this study was to compare in vitro the micro hardness of enamel exposed to the erosive effects of three pre-workout drinks. Forty blocks (4mmx4mm) of bovine enamel were randomly selected and divided among the following pre-workout drinks (n=10): G1: Universal Shock Therapy®, G2: 1.M.R Vortex™, G3: Jack3Dmicro™, G4: Control (distilled water). The enamel microhardness was evaluated before (T1) and after (T2) the in vitro erosive test (5 min/3 times/5 days) using a Vickers digital microduremeter (load 100g/penetration 15s). The data was analyzed using descriptive statistics (mean, ±sd) and for comparison testing, using the Kruskall Wallis test and the t Student test (p≤ 0.05). Dietary Supplementation of Zinc Oxide Nanoparticles on Growth, Haematological, and Biochemical Parameters of Koi Carp Cyprinus carpio var koi

The present study aimed at the dietary supplementation of zinc oxide nanoparticles on growth, haematological and biochemical parameters of Koi carp. The zinc oxide nanoparticles were synthesized and characterized using UV-VIS, SEM, EDAX, and FTIR. Six feeds were prepared with different quantities of synthesized zinc oxide nanoparticles (F1 - Control, F2 -20 mg, F3 – 40mg, F4 – 60mg, F5-80mg and F6 – 100mg) and feed ingredients are fish meal, groundnut oilcake, wheat flour, and tapioca flour.

Nutrition Intervention of Patient with Chronic Kidney Disease (Stage 4) on Maintenance Hemodialysis

We report the case of 27 years old, female patient suffering from CKD (Stage 4) on Maintenance Hemodialysis. No Evidence for Stress-Induced Sympathetic Activity in Young Women Classified as Restrained Eaters

Obesity has been linked to autonomic dysfunction, which is thought to be one of the main contributors for hypertension, cardiac remodelling and death. The aim of the present study was to investigate stress related changes in autonomous function in subjects at high risk for obesity (Restrained eaters). 33 healthy women aged 18-30 years were recruited through advertisement in local newspapers. Classification in restrained and unrestrained eaters was done according to norm tables from the German version of the Three Factor Eating Questionnaire. Participants were exposed to the Trier Social Stress Test, a standardized laboratory stressor. As an indicator of autonomous function the measurement of heart rate was performed. Restrained eaters did not respond with a significant increase in heart rate after stress. The results are interpreted with respect to consequences for nutritional intake and stress coping.

Nutritional Quality of Inventory at a Milwaukee Food Pantry

Little information exists about the nutritional quality of foods distributed at pantries. Therefore, studies are needed to assess the quality of foods offered by pantries to those lacking consistent access to adequate food. To evaluate the quality of inventory at Food Pantry, Milwaukee as it compares to nutrient recommendations outlined in the USDA Dietary Guidelines for Americans 2010. We performed a cross-sectional analysis of the pantry’s February 2015 inventory. A computer algorithm was developed to measure the nutrient density of individual items based on percent daily values per 2000 calorie diet for calcium, fiber, protein, sodium, trans fat, and saturated fat; and added sugar composition.

Assessment of Dietary and Total Greenhouse Gas Emissions from Group of Twenty (G20) and the World

Correlation formulas are developed to estimate the dietary and total greenhouse gas emissions (GHGEs) from Group of Twenty (G20) and the world in 2014 and 2017 using personal meat consumption as the required input. Among the 43 states involved in G20, the 28 states of the European Union (EU28) are considered as a whole. Based on 47,381 dietary survey samples, a formula is developed to establish the relationship between the meat consumption and GHGEs from human dietary and total activities.

The 2015 Dutch Food-Based Dietary Guidelines on Alcohol Consumption - A Critical Review

Dietary Intake, Anthropometric Characteristics and Clinical Assessment of Elderly in Ondo State, Nigeria

This study was designed to assess the nutrition status of the elderly in Ondo State Nigeria. Random sampling techniques were used to select 1155 elderly for this study. Socio-demographic characteristics, clinical assessment, food consumption pattern, anthropometric measurements of the elderly were determined. Data entry and analysis were done with the use of scientific instruments. This involved the SPSS version 17. It detailed the analytical tools, including frequencies, percentage and correlations. The result showed that Intake of nutrients by the elderly was shown to be inadequate.

A Nutrition and Physical Activity Education Model for Cancer Risk Reduction Improves Knowledge and Dietary Behaviors among Students in the Alabama Black Belt

An age-appropriate, culturally sensitive Nutrition and Physical Activity Education Model (NPAEM) for cancer risk reduction was developed and implemented. NPAEM was underpinned by the social-cognitive theory. Participants (N=86) were 8 to 11-year-old students from public elementary schools in Macon County, Alabama. The NPAEM comprised of 11 topics and activity/worksheets. Lesson plans, evaluation and hands-on activity/worksheets were developed. The 15-week intervention was cross-sectional, with a pre- and post-assessment design and weekly 45-minute lessons.

Obesity and its Correlates among Junior High School Children in the Accra Metropolis

The prevalence of obesity is on the increase worldwide due to changes in diet and physical activity patterns. Childhood obesity is now a major public health challenge in advanced economies. Obesity in childhood tends to persist into adulthood and to predispose to non-communicable diseases. There is little data on childhood obesity and its correlates and determinants in sub-Saharan Africa. A cross-sectional study was carried out using simple random sampling technique to select 260 junior high school children aged 11-15 years from six basic schools (n=768) from three different socioeconomic (low, middle, high) areas of Accra, the capital city of Ghana.

Gut Microbiomes of Pigs Grown in Organic and Conventional Dietary Regimens

In animal production, antibiotics are used at sub-therapeutic and therapeutic levels for growth promotion and disease prevention. Using antibiotics can result in selecting for drug resistant microorganisms that may spread to humans through consumption of contaminated food. Lately, an increased interest in organic farming, where animals are grown without antibiotics, has been popular amongst the consumers. It is believed that organic farming will reduce antimicrobial resistance in microorganisms. However, the animals grown organically may be prone to diseases, and other microorganisms may thrive in the gut, that may be potentially harmful to humans. We analyzed the DNA of fecal samples of pigs grown under conventional and organic dietary regimens and detected the presence of genes that causes antibiotic resistance.
