Dr. Alex Bekker is Professor and Chairman of Anesthesiology at Rutgers New Jersey Medical School. He obtained his Doctoral Degree in Engineering from the New Jersey Institute of Technology and received his Medical Degree from the Rutgers – New Jersey Medical School. He completed his anesthesia training at Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center in New York. Dr. Bekker has joined the Department of Anesthesiology at the NYU Medical Center in1995 and was appointed a Vice-Chair for Research in 2005. Dr. Bekker is an internationally recognized expert in neuro anesthesia and is frequently invited to speak at Grand Rounds and Scientific Panels. Dr. Bekker has been active in research and for many years. He is an author of 81 peer-reviewed publications including publications in Anesthesiology, Pain, Nature Neuroscience, Anesthesia & Analgesia, and JAMA, 6 US patents, 39 educational reviews and more than 100 abstracts. His work has focused on perioperative brain protection, postoperative cognitive dysfunction, brain function monitoring, neuroinflammation, and postoperative pain control. Dr. Bekker was a PI of numerous clinical trials, including studies sponsored by the National Institute of Aging. He serves on the editorial board of five peer-reviewed journals and is ad hoc reviewer for 15 peer-reviewed journals.

Research: Dr. Pergolizzi has explored genetic differences in drug metabolism that can result in clinically relevant pharmacokinetic drug-drug interactions for analgesic products and their impact on healthcare economics and outcomes. He is also interested in policy issues related to the safe and appropriate use of opioid analgesics and the physiochemistry necessary to create important abuse-deterrent products. He is also interested in complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) and has helped to develop a novel natural/synthetic analgesic product, OxyRub™, in addition to bringing scientific expertise in the evaluation of other CAM and natural products.
