Associate Professor
Food Animal Health Research Program,OARDC
The Ohio State University

Research: Dr. Renukaradhya J. Gourapura interests include understanding mucosal immunology in the respiratory tract of pigs and other species of food animals, host-pathogen interactions and pathogenesis, identification of viral immune evasion mechanisms and development of mucosal vaccines. Elucidate mucosal immune evasion mechanisms of porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome (PRRS) virus and influenza virus. He is involved in identification of potential mucosal candidate adjuvants of bacterial origin and other delivery methods to develop novel mucosal vaccines against infectious diseases of food animals. To develop a suitable mucosal killed viral vaccine delivery system, he is evaluating the biodegradable and biocompatible nanotechnology based approach in the respiratory tract of pigs. In addition, recently he discovered invariant natural killer T (iNKT) cells in pigs and in particular in their lungs. iNKT cell has been identified as a potent immune potentiator capable of inducing heterologous protection to influenza virus in murine models. Currently, he is evaluating the methods to induce NKT cell-mediated cross-protective immunity to a killed swine influenza virus vaccine in pigs.

Department of of Anatomy
Auburn University
United States
Benson T. AKINGBEMI had his initial education in Nigeria where he received the D.V.M. (1980), M.Sc. (1988) and Ph.D. (1997) degrees from the University of Ibadan. With a Research Fellowship from the National Institutes of Health, Dr. Akingbemi came to theUnited States in 1997 for postdoctoral training. Between 1997 and 2004, he worked on environmental toxicology and Leydig cells with Dr. Matthew Hardy, Center for Biomedical Research of the Population Council, Rockefeller University, New York.
Research: The male sex steroid hormone, testosterone, which maintains the male phenotype, is produced primarily by Leydig cells in the testis. Data from transgenic mice lacking one or both ER subtypes support the hypothesis that estrogen has a regulatory role in male reproduction. Moreover, there is growing public concern that chemicals in the environment (food, air, water), which have estrogenic properties, may have adverse effects on reproductive health. These compounds alter the endocrine profile by acting through steroid hormone receptors and are designated endocrine disruptors.
