Israel
Dr. Paula Carolina Kotli is a biomolecular scientist and the founder of paleoproteomics research in Israel, pioneering the molecular study of ancient and forensic materials. She earned her B.Sc. and M.Sc. in Biochemistry and Food Science from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and completed her Ph.D. in Paleoproteomics at the Weizmann Institute of Science, where she developed proteomic methods to study animal domestication through enamel analysis of samples from the Pre-Pottery Neolithic (PPN) Southern Levant. Currently a postdoctoral fellow at Tel Aviv University in Dr. Vivian Slon’s Historical and Prehistorical Genetics Laboratory, Dr. Kotli leads research integrating ancient DNA and proteomics to detect ancient pathogens and reconstruct molecular evidence from highly degraded or poorly preserved samples. Her studies—published in Scientific Reports, Journal of Proteome Research, and Journal of Archaeological Science: Reports—include the internationally acclaimed discovery of a Byzantine ascetic woman buried in chains, which redefined early Christian asceticism and demonstrated the forensic power of biomolecular evidence.

He was an instructor in the Department of Psychiatry of Harvard Medical School and an Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Human Behavior at University of Mississippi Medical Center. Since 2007, Dr. Zhu has been recruited as the faculty of this campus.
Research: My research interests are related to the molecular neurosciences. The projects focus on the exploration of cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying the modulation of the noradrenergic and serotonergic phenotypes in the brain,as well as the neuroprotection of specific bioactive compounds from neuronal toxicity. We are investigating effects of stress hormones, transcription factors, antidepressants and other psychopharmacological compounds on gene expressionin central catecholamine systems, and on neurogenesis. In addition, we study the neuroprotective effect of agmatine, a putative neurotransmitter in the brain, on hippocampal neurons in vitro and in vivo. This latter project also includes investigating the regulation of enzymes involved in the synthesis of agmatine. A variety of cellular and molecular biological methodologies, as well as stereotaxic surgery and behavioral analyses are applied to cell and/or animal models to address these research goals. Since dysfunction of neural circuitry in central catecholamine systems and cell injury are potentially involved in the development of psychiatric and neurological illnesses such as major depression, and Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s diseases, these studies will improve our understanding of the molecular pathology of these disorders, and may ultimately lead to improved therapeutic interventions.

Universiti Sains Malaysia
Malaysia
Dr. Syed W. Shah is Associate Professor of Forensic Science at the School of Health Sciences, Universiti Sains Malaysia. His research interests are in the development of high surface area functionalized materials capable of remediating contaminated environments by selective removal of trace inorganics and trace organics. The functionalized materials are developed by insertion of small organic molecules into the polymeric chain, for example, Amberlite XAD-2, XAD-4, XAD-7 and XAD-16. The organo-functionalized XADs are characterized by spectroscopic and thermal methods, and their sorption potential is investigated in batch and column equilibrium conditions. Various isotherm and kinetic models are applied to evaluate the nature of sorption and sorption capacity of the sorbents. Thermodynamics of sorption is also investigated. Dr. Shah was born on October 19, 1959 in Hyderabad, Sindh, Pakistan. He was raised in village Amin Lakho and graduated from University of Sindh with a B.Sc. in chemistry in 1980. He received his M.Sc. in biochemistry in 1980 from the University of Sindh. After M. Sc., he spent two summers as a Biochemist at the Department of Fisheries, Sukkur, Sindh. In May 1986, he joined National Center of Excellence in Analytical Chemistry (NCEAC), Jamshoro, as a Junior Research Associate, where he earned Ph. Hongxia Hao has been a research associate at Key Laboratory of Evidence Science, China University of Political Science and Law, Ministry of Education since 2009. She received a doctorate in Drug Analysis (2009) from Chinese People’s Public Security University. Her current research work focuses on the development of chemical sensors as well as functional materials for drug and explosive analysis.
Research: The main scope of Hongxia Hao's research is the development of new techniques for application in toxicology and trace evidence, especially in drug abuse. Our lab is employing a surface Plasmon resonance system for the detection of drug abuse and explosive. Molecular imprinting technology is applied in surface Plasmon resonance spectroscopy for highly sensitive and selective detection of drug such as morphine and heroine. The approaches require small amounts of polymer and would also be feasible for expensive target molecules such as toxins and explosive. Another research is about the new systematic analysis method of CO poisoning, using HS/GC/MS and providing an experimental basis among these cases of CO poisoning. We detect the %COHb in blood and hepatic tissues no matter they are fresh or decomposed.
