Dr Gaetano Giammona has been interested in the synthesis of biocompatible polymers to be used in biomedical field; such a study led to the preparation of a new plasma-substitute at protein-like structure. Besides, he has been interested in the synthesis, characterization, biological evaluation and interaction with biomembrane models of therapeutic polymeric systems able to give a prolonged and target drug release. Topics of his study have been: macromolecular prodrugs, polymeric micelles, hydrogels (obtained either for chemical crosslinking or gamma or ultraviolet radiations), micro and nanoparticles based on polymeric and solid-lipid structures, interpolyelectrolytic complexes to be used in gene therapy.
