In his Phenomenology of Spirit, Georg Hegel suggests that to be moral is to act in accordance with the moral tradition of one’s own country. 1 Hence, for Hegel, individuals act morally to the extent that they bear witness to the traditional moral climate in which they are situated. Thus understood, acting morally is a social phenomenon, comprised of attitudinal ebbs and flows that are nuanced by the changing moral traditions with which they inextricably interrelate. This much has proven particularly true with regard to the evolution of western attitudes toward death and [1,2] dying. 2 Indeed, significant traditional changes from the Middle Ages to the present day have transformed the hidden perceptions of death and dying (“thanatological apprehension”) of history into the increasingly rapid and perceptible expressions of [3] today.3

Administration of exogenous progesterone or progestin can suppress estrous behavior in mares. Compounded long-acting formulations of progesterone are widely available. The objective of this study was to determine if a long-acting injectable progesterone formulation would suppress behavioral estrus in mares. Five mares were monitored daily by rectal palpation and transrectal ultrasonography to insure that all mares were cycling normally. Endogenous progesterone was removed through lysis of the corpus luteum seven days post-ovulation with prostaglandin F2 alpha (PGF2α). Two days following PGF2α administration, mares received 2 g of long-acting progesterone intramuscularly. Estrous behavior was determined daily by individually exposing mares to a stallion beginning two days before injection of long-acting progesterone until ovulation occurred. Serum progesterone concentrations were significantly elevated (>2 ng/mL) for 10 days following treatment with a long-acting injectable progesterone. Behavioral estrus suppression during this period was minimal and not significant. All mares developed local injection site reactions and half the mares developed febrile responses following treatment. In conclusion, the long-acting compounded formulation of progesterone elevates progesterone concentrations for 10 days but does not suppress estrous behavior to a stallion. Due to the side effects associated with this treatment, long-acting formulations of injectable progesterone are not appropriate for use in performance horses.

Phenylbutazone (PBZ) is commonly used in equine patients for treatment of orthopedic injuries. Phenylbutazone may adversely affect bone healing because of suppression of prostaglandin production. We hypothesized that administration of the prostaglandin analog misoprostol would enhance bone healing and mitigate the untoward effects of PBZ on bone response to injury in horses. The objectives of this study were to determine whether the administration of misoprostol would enhance bone healing and whether concurrent administration of PBZ and misoprostol would mitigate the untoward effects of phenylbutazone. Twenty horses were randomly assigned to one of four groups (n=5 per group): Group 1 (untreated control), Group 2 (phenylbutazone alone), Group 3 (misoprostol, alone), or Group 4 (concurrent treatment with phenylbutazone and misoprostol). A 4.5-mm diameter uni-cortical bone defect was created in one metacarpal III bone of all horses. Fluorochromic bone labels were administered intravenously on Days 0, 7, and 14. Computed tomographic osteoabsorptiometry and histomorphometric analyses were performed on the harvested metacarpal bones. Phenylbutazone treatment caused a decrease in endosteal new bone formation. Administration of misoprostol appeared to mitigate the magnitude of the PBZ effect on new bone formation (endosteal in-growth, p

Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) is a chronic autoimmune inflammatory disease. Several indexes can measure SLE activity, and Systemic Lupus Erythematosus Disease Activity Index (SLEDAI) is one of them. The aim was to associate SLEDAI with inflammatory biomarkers present in serum (C3, C4, CH50, C-reactive protein, and creatinine), proteinuria (urine 24h) and urine NGAL in SLE patients. This study included 43 SLE patients who were arranged in two groups according to the value of SLEDAI. One group, SLEDAI 0-4 (n=25), included SLE patients with low activity, and the other group, SLEDAI >4 (n=18), included SLE patients form moderate to high activity. Level of urine NGAL (uNGAL) was determined by ELISA, and the data were analyzed using GraphPad Prism 5.

Aeric syndrome during a multiple trauma reflects the severity of this latter, which made mention to extra thoracic or intra thoracic lesion. This requires a good diagnostic and therapeutic strategy. We report the case of a young patient admitted to emergency in an array of closed multiple traumas where the etiological diagnosis was rare and unknown. This case highlights that a careful questioning and a good examination in admission can reveal earlier the diagnosis, the thing that was not well led in our case, because the patient was mute, anxious, and not cooperating making unnoticed rape history.

Obesity is a contemporary phenomenon that consumes an enormous and substantial public expense regarding health for needy countries. The amount spent only for the cost with the treatment of obesity for the SUS (The Unified Health System) was estimated around half a billion of reais in 2011 (Oliveira, 2013) [1]. In this scenery, the purpose towards prevention and control initiatives concerning these outlines must really become fundamental. This study has aimed to analyze the efficacy developed by a multidisciplinary team during a period of 12 months (from 2016 to 2017). The intervention has consisted in a number of periodic consultations supervised by this special team within food directions and physical training. All the data were synthesized and analyzed statistically through the Mcneunann Test, regarding the significance degree of p< 0.05. It has been observed in such results that most of the participants belong to feminine sex having from 45 to 81 years of age, a low schooling and a short monthly income. For the present, what must be said is that the intervention was wholly effective providing reduction of corporal measures, improvement in the quality of the diet consumed, besides a strengthening in the social network, empowering for the participants, further the expansion of knowledge about topics relative to food and nutrition. So, it can finally be suggested that initiatives towards obesity control are indeed effective and important and must be promoted everywhere.

The identification of altered splicing signatures in Myelodysplastic Syndromes (MDS) could likely provide key markers for diagnosis, prognostication and development of novel therapeutics. This review presents an insight into role of spliceosomal gene mutations in the pathogenesis of MDS, emphasizing on their clinical and prognostic significance. We also discuss emerging studies delineating the functional consequences of these mutations and pointing towards the emergence of a new leukemogenic pathway involving spliceosomal dysfunction.

Treatment of Hepatitis B infection is available with the help of existing drugs but the eradication of HBV infection is still under the pipeline. The application of novel drugs and gene-based therapies for HBV infection in need of the hour, however, the lack of efficient cell culture system, animal models for viral infection and replication acts as a major obstacle for novel therapies. This not only hampers the progress of HBV research but also stress the need for effective forthcoming therapeutics for Hepatitis B infection. Proteomic studies to understand the protein ubiquitination and to find molecular markers are the effective tools to study the HBV infection, pathogenesis and its control.
