Staphylococcus aureus is a serious risk to public health as it triggers human infections ranges from wound abscess to life threatening states. As involvement to the global effort the objectives of this study were to examine the incidence of Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) in Taif region, Saudi Arabia. Moreover, this work aimed to estimate the relation between the phenotypic antibiotic susceptibility patterns and the antibiotic resistance genes mong MRSA isolates. A total of 67 wound specimens were taken from patients. Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) was selected by growing on Mannitol Salt Agar supplemented with methicillin (5 mg/l). The prevalence of methicillin-sensitive S. aureus (MSSA) and methicillin-resistant (MRSA) wound carriage among patients was 51 and 49 %, respectively.

Opioids are commonly prescribed for acute pain management. Complications such as nausea, vomiting, itch and constipation are not uncommon. Two unusual and unexpected complications that can arise in the acute setting are opioid-induced hyperalgesia (OIH) and acute opioid tolerance (AOT). The diagnostic challenges of these two entities are mainly attributed to their unpredictable onset and lack of strict diagnostic criteria. In the pediatric setting, additional confounding factors such as separation anxiety, hunger, thirst and poor verbal communication further complicate discerning between the two phenomena.

Irrational use of antimicrobials in food animals is reported as a primary cause of antibiotic resistance (AMR) at the animal human interface with detrimental public health implications. Veterinarians are the main player for antimicrobial usage in food producing animals (FPAs). Therefore, this study was aimed to explore the key determinants of antibiotic prescription behavior among FPAs practitioners and its public health implications. For the purpose, a pre-tested questionnaire was presented to FPAs veterinarians.

Idiopathic pulmonary hemosiderosis (IPH) extremely rarely occurrs in adults according to current literature.We report one case of IPH in a middle-aged woman presenting with extensive central-predominant ground glass opacities and consolidation in the lungs. Since these imaging findings are not specific and can be similar to other diffuse pulmonary diseases, it is essential to have an deep understanding of this disorder. Imaging findings must be combined with clinical laboratory examination to make a diagnosis of IPH. Transbronchial lung biopsy (TBLB) is the gold standard for evaluation of suspected patients. We review the current literature and provide a recommendation based on discussion.

Patients with Philadelphia-negative myeloproliferative neoplasms (PN-MPN) are at a higher risk for venous thrombosis. Thromboelastometry may prove efficient to evaluate the patient’s thrombotic risk. In this study, based on data from 114 patients with PN-MPN from a single center in Greece, hemostatic profile was assessed with routine coagulation tests, Rotational Thromboelastometry (ROTEM® ), and Platelet Function Analyzer (PFA)-100 and correlated with clinical, laboratory, treatment characteristics, gene mutations and polymorphisms of poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase-1 (PARP-1)

Controlling osteoarthritic pain has emerged as a major health care challenge. Available treatments are either cytotoxic or addictive and therefore there is an urgent need to develop alternative treatment options. We previously developed a liposomal-alginate construct to improve local anesthetic delivery as a potential chronic pain management treatment.

Forty patients with CHDs who received liver biopsy to stage fibrosis and 12 normal subjects performed also shear wave elastography (SWE) and ELF-test. We chose two different outcomes for histological fibrosis (F0-F1 vs F2-F4) and (F0-F2 vs F3-F4). ELF-test and SWE were independent predictors, categorized using ROC analysis. Two scores called SCORE1 and SCORE2 were devised.

3D gas-solid coupled symmetrical numerical model was developed on the basis of multiphysics finite element platform to study coal seam fracture stimulation under the high pressure gas impact loading generated by the highly pressurized multi-discharge carbon dioxide gas fracturing technique to improve pre gas drainage efficiency. The purposes of this study are to understand the natural and operational factors contribute to coal seam fracture stimulation and improvement of coal seam gas drainage efficiency and the interaction of these parameters.

From Jan –2004 to Dec-2004, five patients were referred to the surgical department with a diagnosis of endocarditis refractory to medical therapy. Patients were all male, age ranging 16 years to 28 years with a mean of 22 years. All of the five patients had native valve endocarditis of the tricuspid valve with a history of drug addiction in common. Their presentations included, sepsis, failure and recurrent pulmonary embolism. Three of them had bacterial, while two had fungal infection which was proven after blood cultures. After resuscitation, stabilization and preoperative workup, tricuspid valvectomy was performed on these patients because of the destructive and irreparable nature of the native valve. Fortunately, all had uneventful recovery after surgery. Pre-operatively these patients were treated with antibiotics and antifungals, and continued thereafter for almost 4 to 6 weeks in the post-operative period. Postoperatively there was significant tricuspid regurgitation in a subset of patients who had a follow-up. The Left Ventricular (LV) function remained normal to moderate with a moderate pulmonary artery pressure. These patients were discharged on antibiotics and anti-failure medications as per the GDMT.

Donepezil is a potent, selective, noncompetitive and reversible inhibitor of acetylcholinesterase, commonly used for the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease. The aim of this study is to describe clinical variables and comorbidities in patients with shock, at arrival to the emergency department, and evaluate the diagnostic validity for different shock etiologies. This was a retrospective cohort study with tertiary analysis of data previously published in two other studies. The study population was all patients with shock, arriving to the emergency department at Odense University Hospital between 2000 and 2011. Shock was defined as systolic blood pressure ≤100mmHg and one or more organ failures. Patients were grouped according to discharge diagnoses and this method was manually validated through patient records. The diagnostic value of 26 clinical variables and 10 comorbidities were described and tested.

Laryngotracheal stenosis is one of the important causes of pediatric airway obstruction, and the etiology can be classified as congenital and acquired. With the widespread use of tracheal intubation and tracheotomy in pediatric emergency, iatrogenic laryngotracheal stenosis is gradually replacing trauma and infection as the major cause of acquired laryngotracheal stenosis [1]. Nowadays, open surgery is the first choice for severe laryngotracheal stenosis cases [1,2]. Here, we describe a case of childhood iatrogenic severe laryngotracheal stenosis, and the reflection on the current treatment methods of children with laryngotracheal stenosis.

Haemangiomas are the most common benign incidentally detected hepatic lesions with a prevalence of ~20%. Most of them have typical imaging features and are easily diagnosed on triple phase studies. These are capillary, flash and giant hemangioma. Another subset of haemangiomas are Sclerosing hemangiomas or atypical haemangioma; these are sclerosed, thrombosed and/or hyalinised due to which these are heterogenous and show varied appearance making them difficult to diagnose.
