External jugular vein aneurysm with thrombosis presenting as neck swelling is a rare clinical entity and rarely encountered in routine clinical practice in otorhinolaryngology. We present a case of a 52-year-old female with external jugular vein aneurysm presenting as a neck mass. Ultrasound of the neck and CT showed saccular dilation of the external jugular vein with thrombosis within the aneurysm. Saccular aneurysm of the external jugular vein is very uncommon and can lead to thrombotic complications with serious consequence.

Subcutaneous emphysema and pneumomediastinum following extraction of mandibular third molars are rare. These complications are caused by forceful injection of air into the connective tissue. The symptoms may vary depending on the quantity of air, its location and the presence or absence of infection. In most cases, the subcutaneous emphysema will begin to disappear in 3-5 days. This report presents a case of subcutaneous emphysema and pneumomediastinum after wisdom extraction.

Penetration syndrome is a common reason for consultation in the emergency department. It is a source of morbidity and mortality, especially in children between 1-3 years old. It is manifested by a sudden onset of choking, coughing and cyanosis while the child is perfectly healthy. We report the case of a 4 years old boy who suddenly presented dysphonia and dyspnea grade 2 (mMRC scale). He was brought to the emergency room after six weeks of persistent symptoms.

Submucous leiomyoma and endometrial polyps are the most challenging causes of heavy menstrual flow (menorrhagia) accompanied with infertility, and other clinical issues. There are different hysteroscopic modalities for management of heavy menstrual flow caused by submucous myomas and polyps including conventional hysteroscopic resectoscopy and a novel, recent uterine hysteroscopic morcellator.

Recent literature has suggested that junior doctors’ knowledge of ionising radiation is inadequate. Advances in technology and availability have led to of these investigations being readily requested. Exposure is associated with adverse risks especially malignancy; therefore in accordance with the Ionising Radiation (Medical Exposures) Regulation (IR(ME)R), clinicians should be aware of radiation doses and their legal responsibility as referrers.

The present study was performed to determine the quality and the quantity of DNA extracted from buccal swab at two intervals to compare the DNA quality and quantity before and after brushing. Five (5) healthy males where used in the study, ten (10) Buccal swabs where collected at two intervals, five (5) before brushing and five (5) after brushing commonly available samples and to estimate the DNA yield and purity from the various times of collection. The purity and the concentration of the extracted DNA were determined spectrophotometric analysis, and the adequacy of DNA extracts for the PCR-based assay was assessed by amplifying a 1030-bp region of the mitochondrial D-loop.

ObjectivesThe dual-energy computed tomographic (DECT) technique allows the differentiation of materials with large atomic numbers such as iodine. The basic principle of dual-energy CT is material decomposition based on attenuation differences at different energy levels. The parameters for iodine extraction are a minimum value of – 960 HU, and a maximum of –600 HU. Lung parenchyma with normal perfusion in this attenuation range is presented in orange, and an area of decreased perfusion is visualized as an iodine defect area.
