Somatic, inactivating PIGA mutations in haematopoietic stem cells, followed by an unknown autoimmune selection process in favor of the mutated clone, are thought to be important events in the pathogenesis of paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria (PNH). Recently, a second clonal event involving the HMGA2 gene was reported in some PNH cases, and over expression of this gene was postulated to promote proliferation of the mutated clone.

Skin fold thickness prediction equations are widely used for estimating body fat percentage and thereby obesity. Equations to estimate body fat percentage for the Asian Indian population do not yet exist. The main purpose of this study was to develop and validate a new prediction equation for the estimation of body fat percentage in Asian Indian adults using anthropometric measurements (skin folds, circumference, bone breadth) and DEXA.

The water layer adjacent to the hydrophobic and hydrophilic moieties of self-assembled monolayer surface plays an important role on formation of densely packed self-assembled monolayers. Fourier transforms infrared spectroscopy and atomic force microscopy based study shows that the quality of self-assembled monolayer of thiols is dependent on re-structuring of surrounded water molecules.

Dyke Davidoff-Masson syndrome (DDMS) is a rare disease characterized by cerebral hemiatrophy due to brain insult in fetal life. Clinical symptoms include seizures, facial asymmetry, hemiplegia or hemiparesis, and mental retardation.

A patient is present who has chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) and developed a vasculitis involving the skin and large vessels along with immune complex mediated glomerulosclerosis. Both vasculitis and immune complex nephritis are rare manifestations of CLL.

Dialysis patients are known to tolerate high potassium due to the chronic hyperkalemia that is inherent in their disease. Despite this, most reports of extremely high potassium (>9 mmol/L) are in the setting of cardiac arrest. We describe the case of a 57-year-old Caucasian male with past medical history significant for end stage renal disease known to be non-adherent to a low potassium diet as well as missed dialysis appointments.

In relation to assisted mammalian reproduction, the goal of cryopreservation is to preserve without significant loss of viability a stock of gametes and/or embryos with a view to thawing those cells for use in in vitro reproduction treatments. There are numerous cryopreservation protocols, which vary in terms of cryoprotectant used, storage temperature, freezing and thawing rates, and the particular cells that they are suitable for preserving.

Erosive hand Osteoarthritis (EOA) is a common and debilitating form of hand OA for which there are no proven or efficacious therapies. Interleukin-1 beta (IL-1β) plays a prominent role in OA joint inflammation. Canakinumab is a selective IL-1β inhibitor.

Excessive exposure to club drug gamma-hydroxybutyric acid (GHB) would cause cognitive dysfunction in which impaired Ca2+-mediated neuroplasticity in hippocampus may play an essential role in the pathogenesis of this deficiency. Considering melatonin is positive for neuroplastic regulation, the present study aims to determine whether melatonin would exert a neuro-protective effect on cognitive function following GHB.

13α(21)-Epoxyeurycomanone (EP) and eurycomanone (EN), the polar quassinoids of Eurycoma longifolia extract (TAF2) formulated as a lipid-based solid dispersion (TAF2-SD) to increase sperm count for oligospermic infertility, displayed improvement of oral pharmacokinetics and bioavailability in rats over the non-formulated TAF2 extract.

There are several anthropometric measures that are useful for diagnosis obesity and also are related to the development of different cardiovascular risk factors. The purpose of this study was to determine the predictive ability of various anthropometric parameters for the multiple risk factors aggregation (MRFA) in the adult population of the city of Maracaibo-Venezuela.

Chronic anal fissure is a commonest anal condition of world population and our country is not an exception. Conservative management is initially recommended with creams and oral analgesics. When conservative measures fail despite of recommended length of therapy, surgical option is offered to the affecters.

Although plant derivatives have shown promise in reducing enteric methane (CH4) emissions from ruminants in short-term studies, investigation on possible rumen microbial adaptation to these compounds is still limited. The objective of this study was to assess the possibility of mixed rumen microbial adaptation to antimethanogenic plant derivatives over relatively long-term in vitro incubation. Treatments were: garlic oil, carvacrol and thymol, each at a final concentration of 300 mg/l.

During the Nigerian Civil War, the world community became aware of the deaths due to classical Kwashiorkor. However, the purpose of the present paper is to reveal that there was the hitherto unknown concomitant malnutrition disease due to paragonimiasis, this being due to eating poorly cooked crabs because of the stresses of war time.
