Predictors of Delayed Diagnosis and Evolution in Sub-Saharan Immigrants with HIV Infection in a Hospital in Madrid (2004–2013)

The aim of this study was to analyze the delayed diagnosis and evolution of HIV infection in predominantly sub-Saharan immigrants compared to other patients in a hospital in Madrid between 2004 and 2013. We retrospectively analyzed new HIV diagnoses. Late presentation or advanced disease were considered the presence of CD4 lymphocyte counts less than 350 or 200 cells/µl at diagnosis, respectively, or an AIDS-defining disease regardless of the CD4 count. Patients were compared according to their origin and sex.

Perceptions and Practices of Dental Caries Prevention by Maryland Latinas: A Qualitative Study

In 2007 a young boy, Deamonte Driver, living in Maryland died from dental caries when the untreated infection spread to his brain. The immediate reaction by the state and community was to take steps to ensure that such an event never again occurs. A major activity was to conduct a state-wide oral health literacy needs assessment.

Acculturation and Subclinical Atherosclerosis among U.S. South Asians: Findings from the MASALA study

Longer duration of residence among immigrants to the United States, a proxy measure of acculturation, has been associated with higher subclinical atherosclerosis. South Asian immigrants are the second fastest growing immigrant group in the U.S. but little is known about the effects of acculturation with atherosclerosis in this high cardiovascular risk population.
