Enteric Pathogens in Patients with Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome from Porto Velho City, Rondonia State, Western Amazon, Brazil

Patients with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), mainly those who live under poor sanitary and socioeconomic conditions, are often diagnosed with Gastrointestinal (GI) tract diseases. The lowest CD4+ T-cell counts are not found in the plasma, but in the GI tract, the biggest HIV source, thus allowing opportunistic infections. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to identify the epidemiological factors of GI infections and the prevalent pathogens in HIV patients from Porto Velho City, Rondônia State.

The Effect of Different Surface Treatments and Cement Materials on the Bonding between Dentine and Restorative Materials

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of different surface treatments and cement materials on the bonding between dentine and restorative materials. In this study, 135 extracted third human molars, three different restorative materials (Cr-Co alloys, composite and zirconia) were used. Acid etching and sandblasting were used the surface of materials and one group was identified to control group. After the surface treatments, restorative materials were bonded to dentine with three cement materials (self-adhesive resin cement, conventional resin cement and glass ionomer cement). The shear bond strength (SBS) test was applied by using a universal testing machine. The statistically analysis of obtained data were performed with use n-way analysis of variance test.The result of n-way analysis of variance test showed that there were statically significant differences either surface treatments or luting cements on the bonding dentine to restorative materials (p=0.001). The results showed that the lowest shear bond value (3.24±3.62 N) was identified in control group of zirconia materials bonded to dentine with glass ionomer cement. The highest shear bond value (94.66±68.36 N) was identified in acid etched composite materials bonded to dentine with conventional resin cement.

Effect of Levonorgestrel-Releasing Intrauterine System on Sexual and Urinary Functions

The effects of the levonorgestrel-intrauterine system (LNG-IUS) on urinary and sexual functions of women with idiopathic menorrhagia were evaluated using two internationally validated questionnaire forms. This prospective study included (30-49) year-old women with idiopathic menorrhagia (n=91), who visited the Gynecology and Obstetrics Clinic of the hospital. The index of female sexual function (IFSF) questionnaire and the international consultation on incontinence modular questionnaire short form (ICIQ-UI) were used to evaluate sexual and urinary system functions, respectively, pre-, and 6 and 12 months post-LNG-IUS insertion. The IFSF scores were (mean ± SD) 27.1 ± 6.9, 30.0 ± 7.2, and 32.7 ± 7.5 at pre-, and 6 and 12 months post-LNG-IUS insertion, respectively (p<0.001). Compared with pre-LNG-IUS use among 91 patients, the IFSF score (symptoms improved) was increased in 47 and 60 patients and decreased (worsening symptoms) in 10 and 8 patients at 6 and 12 months post-LNG-IUS use, respectively. The ICIQ-UI scores were 4.9 ± 4.4, 3.7 ± 4.0, 2.8 ± 3.0 in pre-, 6, and 12 months post-LNG-IUS insertion, respectively (p<0.001). Compared with pre-LNG-IUS use, the ICIQ-UI score decreased (symptoms improved) in 33 women either in 6 or 12 months post-LNG-IUS use and increased (symptoms worsened) in 11 and 4 patients at 6 and 12 months post-LNG-IUS insertion, respectively.

Methadone and Torsade De Pointes in the Therapeutic Range

Dermatophytosis in a Dog Seropositive for Ehrlichia Spp

In this report, we present a case of dermatophytosis in a dog seropositive for Ehrlichia spp.Mild annular skin lesions observed on initial presentation persisted and became worse during the course of antibiotic therapy. Microscopic examination of the fungal culture of skin scrapings revealed infection with Microsporum gypseum. The patient fully recovered following treatment with topical 1% clotrimazole and antifungal shampoo.

Quantitative Analysis of 30 Drugs in Whole Blood by SPE and UHPLC-TOFMS

An Ultra-High Pressure Liquid Chromatography Time-of-Flight Mass Spectrometry (UHPLC-TOF-MS) method for quantitative analysis of 30 drugs in whole blood was developed and validated. The method was used for screening and quantification of common drugs and drugs of abuse in whole blood received from autopsy cases and living persons.
