Climate Change: Effects and Adaptation Strategies Among Orange Fleshed Sweet potato (ofsp) Farmers in Anambra East and West Local Government in Anambra State, Nigeria

The study investigated the effects of climate change and adaptation strategies among Orange Fleshed Sweet potato (OFSP) farmers in Anambra East and West local government in Anambra State, Nigeria. The specific objectives of the study were to assess the sources of information on climate change by the farmers, determine the causes of climate change in the study area, ascertain the perceived effects of climate change on OFSP farmers, assess the adaptation strategies used by the farmers and identify constraints to climate change adaptation strategies.

Effect of Hot Water Treatment on DNA Quality of Sweet Orange (Citrus sinensis (L) osbeck) Fruits

In this study, mature sweet orange fruits (amber variety) were separately subjected to hot water treatments: 35 o C for 25 and 30 minutes; 45 o C for 15, 20 and 25 minutes; 48 o C for 10, 15 and 20 minutes; 50 o C for 10, 15 and 20 minutes; 53 o C for 10 minutes and 55 o C for 5 minutes and were thereafter assessed for their DNA quality while unheated fruits served as control. The DNA quality was done by rapid random polymorphic DNA-polymersae chain reaction (RAPD-PCR) on the extracted DNA from each set of treated fruits using the RAPD primer OPR 02 (5’ – CAC AGC TGC C-3’).

Effect of Planting Space on Carotenoid Content and Carotenoid Profile of Two Orange Fleshed Sweet Potato Varieties

In this study, the effect of planting spacing (20, 30 and 40 cm) on the carotenoid contents and carotenoid profile of orange flesh sweet potato (OFSP) was evaluated. The carotenoid profiles of two sweet potato species, planted at different spacing distances were compared.

Production and Quality Evaluation of Instant Sorrel (Zobo) Drink Produced by Infusion, Dehydration and Size Reduction Methods

Instant sorrel drink (IZD) was developed by processing purple sorrel calyx into powdery form by the method of infusion, and dehydration and size reduction. Another purple sorrel calyx was processed into liquid zobo drink (LZD); and both the IZD and LZD were subjected to sensory evaluation using the total number of thirty five (35) panels of judges and data was subjected to t-test and preference test analytical tools; and found that IZD was also acceptable by the sensory panelists because the T-tabulated is 2.064, while T-calculated is -14.37 with standard deviations of 0.32 (P≥0.05) between the means; hence, there was no significance difference between the reconstituted IZD and the LZD, because T-calculated is not greater than the T-tabulated.

Chocolate Milk Sweetened With Stevia: Acceptance by Children

We investigated children’s acceptance of chocolate non-fat milk, sweetened with sucrose and stevia (Enliten®) with eighty-four children (11-14 years old) under four sweetness conditions. Samples were evaluated with a structured 7-point hedonic scale, ranging from “super bad” to “super good”, for color, sweetness, flavor, texture and overall liking. The chocolate milk with 18g of sucrose with stevia was more accepted; chocolate milk with no sugar added (NSA) and with stevia had lower notes.
