The objective of this review is to describe results of epidemiological and economic studies carried out in Brazil that can assist in the decision making process at the region, herd and individual levels for the prevention and control of bovine mastitis. At regional and herd-levels, we present data from a time series analysis comparing somatic cell counts in herds located in Brazil and in the United States (US), an estimation of the prevalence of contagious mastitis pathogens in a specific population of herds located at the state of Minas Gerais, and finally we report the identification of risk factors for new and chronic intramammary infections within herds located at the state of Santa Catarina. The outcomes of epidemiological studies that support the decision making process at herd- and individual-level are related to the decrease in prevalence of contagious mastitis pathogens in the herd as well as the estimate of the economic impact of mastitis occurrence.

We live in an individualistic age. People can follow who they like on social media, read news that aligns with their preconceived notions of right and wrong, and generally avoid critical engagement with ideas they disagree with or situations that make them uncomfortable. This modern phenomenon has led to quick judgement and rapid recoil when others share ideas or information that challenges the inertia of their beliefs and choices. In a post-expertise culture [1], people simply don’t want to be told what to do. This is a problem for the profession of dentistry, where the prevailing paternalistic norms for the better part of the past 150 years have focused on the dentist as the unilateral authority, with the primary responsibility of promoting oral health through “education” or “counseling” – polite euphemisms for telling people what to do. Despite our growing body of scientific evidence showing we can keep people and their teeth healthy, we have become collectively exasperated that this evidence-based information isn’t enough to change the behaviors necessary to prevent disease. As healthcare providers, we wonder why people have stopped listening (if they ever really did). But stepping back, we only need to think for a minute about our current cultural milieu, where the curation of consensus leaves us unfollowed, and worse, blocked.

The variability of morphological markers of the reproductive organs in seven natural populations and nine artificial plantations of the Scots pine of Ukrainian Polissya (Volyn, Rivne and Kyiv regions) was studied. The colour of cones, seeds, winged seeds, and the apophysis of the cones of the trees were used as morphological markers.

Fahr Disease (FD) is a rare disorder presenting with basal ganglia calcification and its etiology is still unknown. Although, the common cause of the disease is asymptomatic, but it might manifest with neuropsychiatric symptoms. Dizziness is one of the common symptoms at emergency services and mostly it requires advanced examination to establish a final diagnosis. When a neurological condition is suspected to cause dizziness, it is tried to be diagnosed by imaging methods such as Cranial Computed Tomography (CT) and Brain Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), and knowing the relationship between calcification and symptoms will keep the patient away from unnecessary investigations.

The link between disease and the oral cavity represent clinically important factors that have given rise to the interest in using saliva as a diagnostic fluid for systemic diseases. The objective of this study was to detect and quantify cancer related cytokines in the saliva of women with breast cancer and compare their concentrations to a healthy cohort.

Entomophagy refers to the dietary intake of insects and supplements practiced by millions of people worldwide. It has always been present in the eating behaviours of regions in Asia, Africa, and Latin America. Entomophagy is on the rise both in the feeding of humans and in animal feed. Insects are powerful bio converters that can transform the low quality biomass of nature into proteins of high nutritional value. The recent introduction of the consumption of insects in new types of restaurants and supermarket chains in Western cultures has led us to conduct a review of the subject to see if the myths our Western conceptions can be overcome.

Castleman’s disease is due to a lymphoproliferative disorder by the polyclonal proliferation of B cells inside lymphoid organ.Two types exist: the localized form which is usually benign and multicentric form which is more severe. The main risk is the development of lymphoma. Our aim is to report a case of a 18 years old man patient. Her medical history was unremarkable. She presented with a localized form on the right side of neck lymph node. After the ablation of the nodes,none relapse was noticed.

Indomethacin, is a well-known non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID), a cyclooxygenase inhibitor and extensively used as a medicine to reduce pain, fever, stiffness, swelling or inflammatory responses. Indomethacin inhibits both COX-1 and COX-2, which in turn, inhibits the production of prostaglandins in the gastrointestinal tract and disrupts the mucosal lining in the gastrointestinal tract leading to intestinal bleeding and perforation.

Surgical site infections are amongst the leading cause of morbidity, mortality and cost due to increased hospital stay by patients. A study was conducted to understand antimicrobial susceptibility patterns of major pathogens isolated from surgical site infections in Belize.

The incidence of urinary tract endometriosis ranges from 0.3 to 12% of all women affected by endometriosis. Endometriosis has been successfully treated at General Surgery Department of National Medical Research Center of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Perinatology named after V.I. Kulakov in Moscow. In the 2012-2016 period, we performed 23 bladder resections, ureterolysis in 35 patients, 3 ureteral resections with reimplantations, 3 ureteral resections and uretero-ureteral anastomosis. All these procedures were performed for urinary tract endometriosis. We present 2 cases of urinary tract endometriosis in women of reproductive age. The possibilities of hormonal therapy in the treatment of endometriosis are limited. Surgical intervention with complete removal of endometrial tissue is the most effective; however, the probability of recurrence still remains high, especially in young patients.

Vital pulp preservation in the treatment of deep caries is challenging due to sealing issue. The aim of this study was to compare the physicochemical properties and radiopacity of various light curing pulp capping materials. In this study, SEM-EDS analysis and the radiopacity of four different pulp capping materials including ThereCal LC, Biner LC, Calci Plus LC, and Activa-Bioactive were evaluated. Each material was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and chemical composition of each material was analyzed by energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopic (EDS) analysis. The diskshaped specimens (8 mm diameter and 1 mm thickness) were prepared from each material and exposed to a digital x-ray along with an aluminum step wedge for the radiopacity assay. The statistical analysis was performed with ANOVA and Duncan’s post-hoc test.

Blunt force trauma resulting in a combination of serious injuries is a significant cause of morbidity and mortality. We present a successfully managed case of blunt force trauma from a motor vehicular collision resulting in concomitant blunt abdominal aortic injury (BAAI) and multiple traumatic abdominal wall hernias (TAWH) that required emergency surgery.

20% and 40% reduction of sodium content of wheat bread and the effects of addition of mahaleb kernel powder (Prunus mahaleb L.) were examined in order to determine the quality characteristics of the wheat flour dough and bread. The rheological properties of dough and antioxidant, sensory properties of sodium reduced wheat bread made with different levels of mahaleb kernel powder were determined.

Studies relating cigarette smoking and body weight yield conflicting results. Weight-lowering effects in women and men have been associated with smoking; however, no effects on weight have been proven. This study examined the association between cigarette smoking and relative weight in adolescent males and females as they age into young adults.

To identify pathogens that are frequently isolated from wound infections in the Turks and Caicos Islands and formulate antibiogram based on their patterns of antimicrobial susceptibility. Bacteriology and antimicrobial susceptibility data from 1343 wound swabs cultured at the Cheshire Hall Medical Laboratory between January 2013 and November 2015 were retrospectively analyzed. The Kirby-Bauer disc diffusion technique was used to perform antimicrobial susceptibility testing. 79.1% of the 1343 swabs cultured were positive yielding a total of 1687 bacterial isolates. Frequently isolated bacteria included Staphylococcus aureus which accounted for 27.6% of isolates, approximately a third of which were methicillin resistant, Pseudomonas spp. (12.1%), Proteus spp. (8.2%), Enterococcus spp. (7.8%), E. coli (7.2%), Streptococcus agalactiae (6.1%), Klebsiella spp. (5.5%), Acinetobacter spp. (4.3%), coagulase negative Staphyloccus (4.0%) and Enterobacter spp. (3.7%). The overall highest resistance rates were seen among tetracycline (46.3%), erythromycin (37.6%) and ceftriaxone (34.2%). Imipenem, penicillin, meropenem and vancomycin had sensitivity rates ranging from 92.3% to 99.5%. Individual resistance rates varied among isolates, some differing significantly from overall rates. When tested against antibiotics routinely used to treat Pseudomonas spp., resistance rates ranged from 1.4-55.5%.

Among the vast and diverse ruminal micro-biota, Archaea account up to 3-4% of the entire microbial population in rumen of ruminants. Methanobrevibacter gottschalkii, Methanobrevibacter thaueri, Methanobrevibacter smithii and Methanosphaera stadtmanae are common ruminal methanogens. Majority of archea are hydrogenotrophic over acetoclastic methanogen in rumen. Methanogens are endowed with co-enzymes that enable them to produce biogenic methane than other microbes. Biogenic methane produced from ruminants has a significant contribution to global warming. So this review enlightened the complete pictures of methanogens in ruminants and their relationships with other ruminal microbes. The study concluded that the methanogen composition remained variable among ruminant species and these dynamics emanated from animal factors, management and geographical variations.

The Movement Assessment Battery for Children (MABC) is used globally to identify and describe impairments in motor development in children; however, norms for Surinamese children are lacking. We thus conducted a cross-cultural comparison for Surinamese children 5 years–5 years and 6 months using the Dutch/Flemish (NL) and United Kingdom (UK) norms of the MABC, second edition (MABC-2).
