Novel Antibiotics for Bloodstream Infections in HSCT

Bloodstream infections (BSI) are one of severe infectious complications faced by hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) patients. BSI increases significantly the morbidity and mortality of HSCT patients. Gram-positive bacteria occurred more frequency than gram-negative bacteria over past decades, but rates of gram-negative bloodstream infections have recently increased again. Antibacterial prophylaxis could be justified in HSCT, infections caused by resistant pathogens increased mortality. New antibiotics such as omadacycline, meropenem/vaborbactam, eravacycline, ceftobiprole, tedizolid, dalbavancin, cefiderocol hold promise for the treatment of highly resistant pathogens.

Changes in Several Disease Parameters Including Abzymes and Hematopoietic Progenitor Colony Formation in Brain Inflammation and Demyelination

Demyelination induced by cuprizone-is a widely used experimental model to analyze processes of re- and demyelination in the central nervous system (CNS). Here we used C57BL/6 mice; a model of experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE) mimicking important aspects of human multiple sclerosis, to evaluate effects of cuprizone-dependent demyelination on different parameters associated with autoimmune inflammation. Gross and Histopathological Alterations in Experimental Trypanosoma Evansi Infection in Donkeys and the Effect of Isometamidium Chloride Treatment

Trypanosoma evansi (T. evansi) infection causes wasting and fatal animal trypanosomosis. This study was aimed at determining the gross and histopathological alterations in donkeys experimentally infected with T. evansi and the effect of isometamidium chloride treatment. Apparently healthy donkeys (N=18) of mixed sexes were randomly assigned to 3 groups; A1 (Infected-untreated), A2 (Infected, isometamidium-treated) and B (Uninfected, control) of six animals each. Each animal in infected groups had about 2.0x106 T. evansi injected through the jugular vein. Parasitaemia levels were evaluated using HCT and Mice Inoculation Test (support test). Gross and histopathological examinations were also conducted post-infection and post-treatment.

Responses and Survival under Pegylated Interferon α2a Treatment for Patients with Post-MPN Acute Myeloid Leukemia and Acute Panmyelosis with Myelofibrosis

We report here for the first time the efficacy of pegylated interferon α2a (Peg-Ifn) as a therapy for patients with myelofibrosis and high blast counts. We treated four patients who were in an accelerated phase of myeloproliferative neoplasms or acute panmyelosis with myelofibrosis using only this drug.

Congenital Dyserythropoietic Anemia Type III and Primary Hemochromatosis; Coexistence of Mutations in KIF23 and HFE

Congenital dyserythropoietic anemia type III (CDA III) can be caused by mutation in KIF23. CDA III differs from CDA I and II in the sense that secondary hemochromatosis has not been reported. However, we have observed elevated serum ferritin in a CDA III family.

Extramedullary Hematopoiesis in a Non-Transfused Elderly Patient Diagnosed with Beta Thalassemia Minor

Extramedullary hematopoiesis (EMH) is a compensatory reaction caused by the presence of hematopoietic precursors outside the bone marrow, ineffective erythropoiesis and patients with chronic hemolytic anemia. The most frequent cause of EMH is thalassemia intermedia, that produces an increase in demand of the hematopoietic system caused by anemia and is not reduced by transfusion therapy.

Efficient Method of Deriving Functional Endothelial Progenitor Cells From Hematopoietic Stem Cells

EPCs (Endothelial progenitor cells) are the precursors of endothelial cells that form the inner lining of blood vessels and are involved in neovascularization and re-endothelializaton of injured tissues. These cells have the potential for treating a multitude of angiogenic disorders giving a new hope in the arena of vascular biology. In the present study, we have demonstrated that cord blood derived expanded CD34+ cells can be differentiated into functional EPCs in vitro.

Nutritional Aspects in Heart Failure

Heart failure (HF) is a complex clinical syndrome, of a progressive character, that has a limited prognostic factor and manifested by various extracardiac aspects. It represents a serious and growing public health problem worldwide, both for its high prevalence and the severity of its clinical manifestations, being the final common pathway of most diseases. Undernutrition is often associated with HF, especially in the later stages of the disease, and may chronically reach cardiac cachexia, a severe manifestation related to poor clinical prognosis.
